Right now, we have 4 conservative justices (Scalia, Thomas, Alito and Roberts), 4 more liberal justices (Souter, Breyer, Stevens and Ginsburg) and one "swing vote"(Kennedy). The judges who are most likely to retire are the more liberal justices, especially Stevens. If Barack Obama gets the opportunity to appoint 3 new Supreme Court justices, the balance of the Court will either stay the same or include more "swing votes". However, if John McCain gets to appoint the justices he has promised the right wing he would appoint, the Court will shift DRAMATICALLY. A McCain presidency could lead to some very right wing 7-2 or 8-1 right wing Supreme Court decisions for generations to come.

Members of the right wing are masters of projection. They falsely accuse non-partisan justices like Anthony Kennedy or conservative justices like Ronald George of being "liberal activist judges" so they can stir the people up and get THEIR conservative activist judges on the bench..the REAL activist judges. We can't give these people an inch. Not one inch!

2. Civil Rights??????????
The entire planet is at stake. Some people seem to think that the consequences are four more lousy years. You can NOT overestimate the RW cabal. When will we have enough evidence to realize this.

5. BINGO!
I'm more worried about the future of mankind in general than just in our civil rights! These monsters are likely to blow us all up just out of spite. Who will stop them? I am more afraid now than I was during the Cuban missile crisis...the criminals who have taken over our country will stop at nothing. I seriously wonder if we'll even have an election next November: am I alone in my feelings of fear? Am I just totally paranoid?

8. I don't believe it's paranoia.
It seems that you, like myself, remember back to when it was easy to believe that we were the good guys. Morality has become absorbed and dissolved into being a tactical tool for selfish manipulation. For me, that is a key signal that we are teetering on the brink.

I believe that in the name of national security that they will do ANYTHING to retain their power. Its not a political game anymore. Its all out war. They have crafted their trump card very carefully. It would be easy for them to stage a situation that justified martial law and suspend national elections. Just look around to see the depths of immorality that they are already shamelessly trying to justify.

Who will stop them? If the people that oppose them don't realize who the enemy really is, we will continue to be vulnerable. At this point, I think its a waste of energy to worry about faith based inititives, or FISA or anything else that isn't focused on electing a president that is outside their influence.

4. Indeed, we're 1 neocon away from the SC effectively declaring the US a police state
I mean this seriously, in reference to Guantanamo Bay. If they'll vote to allow 'suspected terrorists' to be locked up indefinitely, then what's to stop them from justifying locking up American citizens they accuse of other crimes viewed as 'very bad' by society indefinitely even if there's no evidence of people committing such crimes.

Ben Franklin once said "They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security", and that's how our judges should rule when presidents try to run over the constitution when people get panicked about something.

7. All very true, but let's not forget that Thomas, Scalia, Roberts and Alito
were confirmed by Democrats- who had the power to keep them off the court.

Republicans, on the other hand are sure to keep anyone other than a corportist off the court (though we may ge lucky with a Ginsberg).
