How does McCain get a marriage license before he gets his divorce?
Isn't that bigamy?

"McCain obtained an Arizona marriage license on March 6, 1980, while still legally married to his first wife."

2. we started digging around in another thread...
The rules for obtaining a marriage license in AZ is odd in the sense that it doesn't require proof of divorce. There's also no waiting period and the license is good for one year. We haven't been able to find anything on what happens if you obtain a license with one person if your divorce to another isn't finalized.

I would think the application had a checkbox for marital status. If that's the case, then doesn't this mean he lied in order to get the license??

But I was wondering if the flapping jaws on the teevee were talking about it. Seems to me they have no trouble wasting time when one of the major newspapers prints some OMG! story on Obama.

Yes - I believe this should be on the tv all day and all night.

Along with mentioning McCain and the Keating 5.

He wants to drill on the coast of CA for oil -- what a fucktard. The oil off of CA is of such a low grade it can only be used to make asphalt.

Take a multi billion tourist industry and flush it down the toilet to pave the streets.

And we could get Rush to comment on the wifes addiction problem.

20. Even Nevada needs a final divorce prior to getting a license.
Previous Marriages:
Your divorce must be final. You need to know the date (month, year) of your divorce, and the location (city and state) where you were divorced.

Many states have a waiting period ranging anywhere from 3-90 days after your divorce is finalized before being able to legally obtain a marriage license. Looks like he picked the right state.

30. By lying? McCain was still married to his wife when he got married to his mistress
http://www.americablog.com/2008/07/mccain-was-still-married-to-his-wife.html

McCain was still married to his wife when he got married to his mistress
John Aravosis (DC) · 7/11/2008

Why does the Los Angeles Times hate America?. They're mean. John McCain was tortured in Vietnam. So stop talking about his credibility. You can only ask Barack Obama questions about his credibility, and his patriotism, about whether his preacher loves America and whether Obama has a personal problem with the American flag. But don't ask John McCain anything because John McCain is a hero. Even though now we find out that our hero was still living with his wife when he started dating his mistress. It gets even better: McCain was still legally married to his first wife when he got a marriage license for his second wife. I guess adultery and bigamy aren't such a big deal anymore with "family values" leaders like Ohio's Phil Burress who are now supporting McCain. And in any case, they were youthful indiscretions - McCain was only in his 40s at the time. In political reinvention terms, that's practically puberty.

An examination of court documents tells a different story. McCain did not sue his wife for divorce until Feb. 19, 1980, and he wrote in his court petition that he and his wife had "cohabited" until Jan. 7 of that year -- or for the first nine months of his relationship with Hensley.

Although McCain suggested in his autobiography that months passed between his divorce and remarriage, the divorce was granted April 2, 1980, and he wed Hensley in a private ceremony five weeks later. McCain obtained an Arizona marriage license on March 6, 1980, while still legally married to his first wife.

In all seriousness, putting the snark aside. Imagine if Barack Obama had two marriages at the same time. Imagine had Barack Obama lied about living with his first wife while having a mistress on the side. Imagine that all this happened while Obama had promised to speak out vocally about how gay people are a threat to marriage. We'd never hear the end of it from the Republicans and the media.

31. no, its not bigamy
Having a marriage license is not being married. Duh.

And Arizona doesn't require proof of divorce or require disclosure of marital status on the marriage license application. And the license is good for a year.

There's plenty of stuff to nail McCain with. Accusing him of "bigamy" isn't one of them.

34. Is this true?
"KansasModerate, I hate to tell you but the only record that a state has of a marriage is the license. You don't turn it back in once you have the ceremony. Therefore, Mr.McCain was registered a married to two women in two different states. Now, Arizona doesn't require, as most states do, that you show a decree or give the dates of the decree. However, I'm pretty sure that the state expects you to be eligible to marry when you get your license. The whole thing says a lot about John McCain and it's not a pretty picture."

but if you want to claim that's bigamy and look like an idiot, be my guest. Personally, I think raising sustainable allegations against McCain makes more sense than tossing out bullshit that can be knocked down easily. To each his own, I guess.

36. I dunno. My idiot brother in law and his now-ex wife filed for divorce in three counties...
...before they were through.

John McCain doesn't come off as so much crazy as he does calculating and selfish.

John McCain married a model, and when she wasn't all pretty anymore (she lost 4 inches in height due to a car accident and the subsequent surgeries) he went chasing after another model who was not only 17 years younger but an heiress to a fortune.

What a bastard.

Hekate
