Al Gore supported "The Clipper Chip."
Edited on Sun Jun-29-08 05:11 PM by IanDB1
I was outraged at the time.

I even wrote angry letters about it.

I even considered voting for Colin Powell because of this.

Let's keep perspective.

Admit it...

How many of you had to look this one up?

Fool me can't be fooled again!

2. And what made me even MORE angry, was that nobody in the media shared my outrage...
Edited on Sun Jun-29-08 05:08 PM by IanDB1
... except Fox "News."

I certainly wasn't hearing about it on "The Clinton News Network."

Oh, how naive I was!

3. WHAT is "Clipper Chip"
I'm guessing you DON'T mean those plastic duhickies on a spring that clip on the chip bag to keep the air out.

4. Not telling. Making you look it up yourself is half the point of posting this.
Nobody ruin it for anyone else by posting it here.

16. OK, so I read 3 different links from google and still don't get it.
Is the deal that Al Gore was in favor of something that would make it easier for the government to listen in on all my phone calls??

I wish they would. I think it's important that President Bush have personal knowledge of my father in laws bowel habits. LOL

Seriously though, if I understand that correctly, yes, I bet Al Gore was not a popular guy amongst the more libertarian progressives. :)

21. It wasn't even that he wanted to listen-in on everybody.
He wanted to pass a law that companies selling encrypted telephones use a certain kind of encryption chip that the government could obtain a key to if they got a court order.

10. I was outraged too at the time
But given what Bush has done in the last 7 years, it all seems trivial

I only wish I had issues like this to be outraged about, instead of torture, detention without trial, etc

I still hold that he sold out to Detroit. But I never considered doing anything but voting for him regardless. I like to think I was right on both counts.

20. I actually DO remember that!
Edited on Sun Jun-29-08 11:53 PM by calipendence
I remember a quote from him where he said something like "If you know what I know is going on, you'd understand why we need this bill." or something to that effect.

That was about the same time the Telecomm act was being passed. At that time, moreso than the media consolidation, which has had devastating effects on our media now, I was even more enraged at the "Communications Decency Act" that was packaged in the Telecomm Act, which left was out to punish "indecent" speech on the internet that was so nebulously defined at the time. I really felt that Clinton should have vetoed the Telecomm bill just for that by itself. Patrick Leahy, who stood up against that was my hero in those days, and I would have campaigned for him running for pesident if he were to run. Russ Feingold also started to show some good spine during this time period! That was about the time when I first got disgusted with Diane Feinstein as my senator. When she so strongly voiced support for the Communication Decency Act, and I first started to see the pattern that she was for strong (but strong and OPPRESSIVE federal government).

Fortunately we still had a reasonable SCOTUS which threw out that Communications Decency Act then. I'm sure it would have been a different story if it had gone before them today!
