Edwards: 'Yes we can' elect Barack ObamaBY KATHLEEN GRAY • FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER • June 23, 2008
Former U.S. Senator and Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards came to Detroit today to tell community activists that Barack Obama is the only choice for president.
“This is not going to be easy,” he told a crowd attending the national ACORN convention which is being held at Cobo Center in Detroit. “But we’re ready because this election is about taking down walls so that we can finally see that one America.”
One of Edwards’ primary goals during his presidential run was ending poverty in America. Speaking to members of ACORN, which is dedicated to social and economic justice, was a natural fit for the North Carolina native.
“There are practical steps that all of us can take to cut the poverty rate in half and end poverty in America in 30 years,” he said, noting that electing Obama would be a good first step.
“Let’s walk hand-in-hand, and not stop until we get to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue,” he said referring to the address of the White House. “Yes we can and yes we will.”
