High-Level McCain Volunteer Worked To Keep Blacks Out Of Jefferson Group

By Eric Kleefeld - June 16, 2008, 11:29AM

It looks like John McCain could have another controversial campaign associate on his hands. This time it comes in the form of Paula Abeles, a former Clinton-backer who has now taken a lead in organizing support for McCain among women voters.

One problem, as Ben Smith has discovered: Abeles previously attained notoriety in 2003 as part of her husband's association of Thomas Jefferson descendants, working hard to keep out any of Sally Hemmings' African-American descendants. When it was discovered that she'd used a fake Internet identity to undermine the efforts of Jefferson's alleged black descendants, she said it was necessary to make sure the family reunion was "a calm and civilized gathering."

An anonymous McCain aide told Smith: "We typically don't vet people who are simply expressing an interest in supporting the campaign, but the campaign will evaluate the policy to assure that appropriate steps are being taken."

Good grief!

2. Posted earlier here without much interest. I think she's a not-very-good political opportunist.

6. This quote stood out to me:

She initially emailed Politico to complain that her group's members were described as less than prominent, and didn't respond to a follow-up email. She has signed her given name on a pro-Clinton chat board as "Paulie," the name she was quoted under in 2003.

That seems like an odd thing to complain about when the article was initially about her racist appearances.

5. I've always assumed that those who were behind Clinton in the primary, but
have switched to McCain for the general election have racial hangups. And this is one more confirmation of that.

7. calm and civilized are terms that don't apply to the illegitimate black heirs of Jefferson?
Well shut my mouth and call me surprised that this would be someone who would support Hillary Clinton or John McCain?

I am shocked.

I am surprised that this kind of thing could HAPPEN in a presidential campaign.

Don't you know racial preferences are a thing of the past!?!

To imagine that this kind of thing is allowed amongst, the calm and civilized political operatives...

What is this world coming to?

:sarcasm:

And who but Harriet Christian was there, among others?

9. Without rehashing primary stuff, it's worth noting this Paulie
was a regular poster at his44.com (the sig line site of choice for a whole 'wing' of the DU cemetary), and admits having posed for eight months as a 67 year-old African american descendant of Sally Hemmings with an intent to disrupt a yahoo group dedicated to Hemmings' descendants.

It would be charitable to suggest maybe Abeles 'infiltrated' His44.com.

It would also be charitable to suggest that people who believe the earth is 6,000 years old just have trouble with numbers over 10.

13. KO covered this on his show tonight.. I hadn't heard about it previously. He also came to the
same conclusion, although he hesitated to say the term "racist".. but good grief, let McCain have this one; they deserve each other.
