Rasmussen: Self-described liberals up 17%!
Edited on Sat Jun-14-08 09:41 AM by blondeatlast
Rasmussen's "What They Told Us: Reviewing Last Week’s Key Polls"

-- Perhaps inevitably given Hillary Clinton’s high profile as first lady, candidates’ wives are far more important to voters than they used to be. For 61% of voters, their perception of Michelle Obama and Cindy McCain will have a bearing on how they vote. (follow the link at the site for more on this)

-- Who are these guys anyway? Public perceptions of McCain and Obama are changing dramatically – and with historic speed -- the more voters get to know them, a new national survey finds. The early good news for Obama, now regarded by many more as liberal, is that the number of those describing themselves as liberal has gone up 17%.

)all emphasis mine)

Lots more interesting stuff that seems to bode well for Democrats at the link:

4. Funny, I don't remember any huge scrutiny of Laura
perhaps it's her glassy eyed "stepford" look... or her tendency to wear a window covering made into a dress or pantsuit or her lack of any "first lady" programs or interests.

Has there been a first lady in the last 60 years that has been covered less?

6. Take back the vocabulary!
I never stopped referring to myself as 'liberal' - even during the dark days following 9/11 leading up to the invasion of Iraq. Good to see that others are overcoming the 'pug-imposed stigma attached to the word. I look forward to the day when average folks reflexively spit on the ground whenever they hear the word 'conservative.'

8. Thank you George Bush for making conservative a bad word
and liberal is getting the better light now. As it should be.

It is amazing how the GOP has managed to make liberal a bad word. Even most dem politicians back away from being called liberal. I dont understand it..

10. They meant number of liberals is up FROM 17% to 25%.
Edited on Sat Jun-14-08 09:58 AM by Eric J in MN
Over past four years.

That is an increase of 47%.

(If they asked a 100 people, and 17 said they're "liberal" four years ago, and 25 said they're "liberal" recently, that is an increase of 47% in the number of people describing themselves as "liberal." I'm sure they had a bigger sample size, I'm just using 100 as an easy way to show the math.)

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/election_20082/2008_presidential_election/public_perceptions_of_obama_and_mccain_shifting_rapidly

Where do the voters stand in all of this? Thirty-six percent (36%) say they are politically conservative, including 16% who say they are Very Conservative. Thirty-seven percent (37%) say they are politically moderate and 25% claim to be politically liberal. That last figure includes 8% who are Very Liberal.

Compared to four years ago, the number of conservatives is little changed but the number of liberal is up from 17%.

12. My understanding of it is that the 17% is just from last week's polling.
Your link goes to a more detailed repot, mine is just a summary of what they found from laste week, if I understand correctly.

If that's the case, a 17% shift in a weel is pretty astonishing, IMHO.

I'm no expert on these things; I could be reading it wrong.

13. The paragraph refers to a poll from last week with 25%.
Edited on Sat Jun-14-08 11:44 AM by Eric J in MN
Which contrasts with 17% of people identifying as liberals four years ago.

The article is on last week's polls.

The link about the number of self-identified liberals descibes the 17% figure from four years ago and the 25% figure from last week.
