Obama Statement On Tim Russert's Death
I’ve known Tim Russert since I first spoke at the convention in 2004. He’s somebody who, over time, I came to consider not only a journalist but a friend. There wasn’t a better interviewer in TV, not a more thoughtful analyst of our politics, and he was also one of the finest men I knew. Somebody who cared about America, cared about the issues, cared about family. I am grief-stricken with the loss and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family. And I hope that, even though Tim is irreplaceable, that the standard that he set in his professional life and his family life are standards that we all carry with us in our own lives.

4. Holy shit - this thread is the first I even knew about this
Granted, I haven't really been paying too much attention to DU today, aside from a few threads that I've been participating.

This comes as a complete, sudden shock to me. The guy was a class act.

6. "I am grief stricken. . ." Not the usual boilerplate.
That's not what PR people write. They write stuff like "Cindy and I send our prayers. . ." This is personal to Barack. Guaranteed. ". . .also one of the finest men I knew." Nope. Not boilerplate. This is actually his statement, I believe.

Not surprised.

Good PR people don't use boilerplate anyway...
You'd be surprised to know what pieces you read were written, re-hashed and/or edited by a PR person.

Good PR is unrecognizable as such.

12. Point taken.
I meant no offense, but was struck at just how personal the statement was.

16. Me too...
It's a great statement. Obama was wise to make it, and so soon.

I had coffee with Tim every Sunday morning; those mornings are going to be very different going forward. I rarely agreed with him, but I sure spent a lot of time with him:) He'll be missed.

8. McCain's statement

"I am very saddened by Tim Russert's sudden death. Cindy and I extend our thoughts and prayers to the Russert family as they cope with this shocking loss and remember the life and legacy of a loving father, husband and the preeminent political journalist of his generation. He was truly a great American who loved his family, his friends, his Buffalo Bills, and everything about politics and America. He was just a terrific guy. I was proud to call him a friend, and in the coming days, we will pay tribute to a life whose contributions to us all will long endure."

18. From what I have been hearing on the TV Tim was exactly as Barack stated - Very touching!
This statement is very respectful and shows Barack's very human touch, and from what everyone is saying on TV Tim was devoted to a lot of charities and was always there for his friends and family. To be remembered like that is truly a legacy that we all should live for.
