John McCain continues to criticize Senator Obama for not supporting the "surge". It's obvious that the degree of violence has dropped since the surge began, he says. Furthermore, if Senator Obama had had his way, we would have withdrawn our troops from Iraq.
That is all well and good but it is a very weak argument. If we had not invaded the country in the first place, there would have been no need for a "surge". The surge is a strategy created to cover up the failure of John McCain, George Bush and others, to make the right decision in the first place. It's much like saying, "Yeah, I ran us off the road but I was able to steer us into that big tree so that we did not go into the river and drown..."
In Senator McCain's case, there is nothing to brag about with the surge. He thought it would be over in a matter of weeks when Bush invaded. He was all for it. When it went bad, he jumped off the wagon and then claimed that we needed more troops. Now he is taking credit for the surge but wants none of the blame for cheerleading us into an unnecessary and tragic blunder.
