1. Reaching out to the theofascist wing of the reknucklian party.
What else is new. This is good news actually. McCain needs to go campaign for his base in order to actually get them to the polls. Meanwhile Obama can head straight for the center and work on bringing more independents and disgruntled 'moderate' (and I have no clue at this point what that means) republicans onto our side.

16. Blatant pandering isn't new, but can we quote him on this?
The number one issue that is in the selection, that which people should make a selection of the President of the United States, is will this person carry on in the Judeo-Christian principle--tradition that has made this nation the greatest experiment in the history of mankind?

The "number one issue" in selecting a POTUS is will that person "carry on" Judeo-Christian traditions?

Can we agree that either McCain is a pandering liar or, if he really believes this, a deeply misguided student of American government that should be nowhere near the Oval Office?

20. Yes we can quote him,
and Rover's troops will love it.

McCain's resume is quite thin, in fact, so when its brought out, I hope many will understand the consequences.

This blind faith-based stuff is one of the only cards they have to play, no matter how un-American it actually is.

WTF!? I thought we were supposed to be a secular nation, above all religious belief or disbelief?

12. This calls into question his suitability for the job
I would probably have to say yes, that the Constitution established the United States of America as a Christian nation.

This is just plain wrong. For a candidate who pleads to defend the Constitution this is pathetic. The only places in the constitution that religion is referenced:

* Article. VI. - Debts, Supremacy, Oaths <…> no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States

* Amendment 1 - Freedom of Religion, Press, Expression Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof <…>

15. "the government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion."
In 1797 America made a treaty with Tripoli, declaring that "the government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion." This reassurance to Islam was written under Washington's presidency, and approved by the Senate under John Adams.

Thomas Jefferson didn't just reject the Christian belief that the Bible was "the inspired word of God"; he rejected the Christian system too. In Notes on the State of Virginia, he said of this religion, "There is not one redeeming feature in our superstition of Christianity. It has made one half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites" (quoted by newspaper columnist William Edelen, "Politics and Religious Illiteracy," Truth Seeker, Vol. 121, No. 3, p. 33).

He's pandering to George's base, cause he doesn't have one of his own. They're not buying.

11. >barf< this is part of a more general Republican agenda...
keep your eyes and ears opens and you'll hear LOTS of conservative commentators talking about our 'Judeo-Christian traditions'. There's nothing in the bible about democracy or the idea of a republic.

Our institutions are ultimately derived from greek philosophy, not that of the Bible. Religious though the pilgrims were, what they were running away from Europe was not secularism but misrule perpetrated under the guise of 'the divine right of kings', wherein rulers claimed heavenly sanction for their positions of authority and thus primacy of royal blood over law.

(and I'm sure no one really cares), but all of these wingers claim to be "strict constructionists" who are guided by the principles put forth in the Decleration of Independance and the Constitution, but yet the "Treaty of Tripoli" was unanimously approved by the 5th congressional congress which included several signatories to one or both documents including: President John Adams, Vice President Thomas Jefferson, John Langdon, John Rutledge, Charles Pickney, Pierce Butler, Abraham Baldwin. Why don't they let the founding fathers speak for themselves??? :wtf:

Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.
