Why does Obama not include the DCCC And DSCC in his new lobbying rule - why the exceptions for
former lobbyists, unregistered lobbying firm partners, and state lobbyists?

Also, allowing the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to continue to accept lobby and PAC money this election would seem to undermine the message.

Or am I mis-informed about the new Obama lobbyist rules?

1. Obama doesn't control the DSCC or DCCC.
That's my understanding of how these organizations are run. Obama has control over the DNC, and was able to change the rules there, but can't give direct orders to the DSCC or DCCC.

9. Because there's no conflict of interest involved in a Federal-level entity accepting money
Edited on Sat Jun-07-08 11:05 PM by Occam Bandage
from a state-level lobbyist. The problem isn't "LOBBYISTS ARE EVIL AND WE SHALL CRUSH THEM," the problem is the inherent conflict of interest in accepting money from people who are attempting to persuade you to vote in a certain direction.

13. The Illinois state coal lobbyists that funded Obama's State Senate runs do not have the
appearance of a conflict?

"the problem is the inherent conflict of interest in accepting money from people who are attempting to persuade you to vote in a certain direction." - true - but do those folks need to register as Washington federal lobbyists if they drop by the Chicago office for a visit?

26. If they drop by the Chicago office, they'd have to register as federal lobbyists, I think
I think if they lobby a federal legislator at any office they have to register as federal lobbyists. State lobbyists lobby state legislators. I applied for a job a couple years ago with a firm that did state lobbying, and it was solely lobbying state legislators.

33. No. There's no conflict, so long as they are not lobbying him for anything he would do
as a Senator or a President. If they are attempting to lobby him, they need to register as federal lobbyists.

2. As the nominee, Obama effectively leads the DNC, not the DCCC and DSCC
I guess that's the separation of powers thing in action.

all asking the exact same questions, all going silent once they're answered.

35. An intent to discuss why half the Democratic funds are still in question seems fine to me
You seem to be saying that any facts about our party that are not altruistic and happy,
shiny issues are off limits. How should the issue have been approached to make it legit
in your mind?

They are separate bodies. The DSCC and DCCC are Hill committees.

18. I am sorry you are confused. Let me help.
Senator Obama does not want his campaign littered with lobbyist contributions.

Senator Obama now heads the DNC (or Dean reports up to him -- however you want to parse it).

Senator Obama does not want his party political organization littered with lobbyist contributions.

Congressmen/women and Senators may belong to the DNC and may endorse Senator Obama, but they are not within his organization and do not report up to him.

This is their individual decision just as it was his.

So do I. Anyone can "pressure" anyone else to do something. Doesn't mean anything.

I have to say, though, I'm happy to see such questions here, as long as they are reasonably put and answerable. This one seems ok.
