Edited on Sat Jun-07-08 06:21 PM by WilliamPitt
I really hope it isn't just me. I got to watch the speech to the end, and then had to sprint off to a friend's bachelor party (no nudity or dumb crap, we went to the Sox game and roasted in the sun), and I just got back...and wanted to post this question to all of you before I go looking for online/TV feedback and/or reaction.

I think she absolutely stomped the terra.

Am I wrong?

ON EDIT: Just saw Skinner's "Nailed It" thread.

Out. Fucking. Standing.

:toast: to the junior Senator from New York.

Not Obama or his speech writers, and not Hillary's speech writers.

18. Thanks for that - I thought the Obama speech team was in on it
especially the part where she kept repeating that "that's why we have to elect Barack Obama" (or words to that effect). While Hiillary may have written it, I think she borrowed heavily from the structure of Obama speeches.

15. I think it did come from the Obama camp.....or quite a bit of it.....
too many similarities not to conclude such.

As for the speech, it was a good start....although the Democrats' opponent wasn't mentioned once in her speech.

I'm waiting for the speech that talks about Obama and why he, and why not McCain....specifically is the candidate to align with. I'm sure that speech is being written as we speak, because it is needed. Right now, even on the Wes Clark Blog, folks are saying they will never vote for Obama. Hillary fermented that whole situation, and will have to work hard to make those people want to vote Democratic once again. That's what happen when one whips up a frenzy based on twisted up trumped nothings. She has some work to undo.

26. I'm sorry, but as someone of Black heritage, I took a lot of what was perpetuated
by her campaign personally. It will take me a while to get used to the idea that some of what was advanced during the campaign can now all be forgiven and forgotten via one speech. It will take me a few extra months to get over....cause it hurt like hell. Sorry.

2. We, as Dems, have been blessed to see Obama the other night, and Hillary today -
two marvelous, moving, very important...and, especially...hopeful, optimistic speeches that should lead us on to a great victory in November...unless our bludgeoned, numb masses have now grown an umbilical to the type of lies and dirt that the Bush misadministration bestowed on us all.

Yes, greatest speech of her life. I was moved. Bravo!

Edited on Sat Jun-07-08 10:10 PM by calimary
She was very commanding, very compelling. Yes, it could indeed be viewed as the speech of her life.

And I knew this would happen - media people gushed all over it.

(For the record:)
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=6230702&mesg_id=6236469

The snark and heavy criticism she's taken up til now - all but forgotten. They can't say enough nice things about her. Even that little snot-nose Amy-Somebody on CNN. Even she had glowing reviews. All of a sudden, they've fallen in love. St. Hillary. You know what? I'm okay with that. I'm glad they're making like they feel positively toward her. They've otherwise been quite brutal.

The late great Tom Snyder once said "you're only as good as your last show."

Which means - the last views of her will be an absolute love-fest.

What the hell? She deserves it. I thought it was pretty damned magnificent. And she becomes the elder stateswoman (and not even all that "elder," either). She becomes the Grande Dame of the Democratic Party. Well deserved, I think. She fought like hell, and even the bad guys have to give her that (and they HAVE). I thought she did great. And she made such a good point - no longer, never ever again, will it be unthinkable that a woman or an African-American to run for President, and very likely to win. It's no longer unthinkable. No longer unimaginable. No longer far-fetched. No longer a wild leap of the imagination. It's HAPPENED. It very nearly happened for her. It has happened for him. We should all be happy about this. Another barrier has been broken down. In two ways.

And guess what? She looked and sounded VERY PRESIDENTIAL. And it had to be breaking her heart. But what a speech - what a performance! I couldn't have gone out there and handed off to my opponent like that, after such a struggle. I don't know that I wouldn't have been a soppy pile of humiliation. That had to be DAMNED HARD to do - with all the cameras and mikes and millions of pairs of eyes looking at you and judging you during such a dramatic - and disappointing moment in your life.

This Obama supporter would like to give Hillary Clinton credit for going out with class. She made me proud.

74. She made every woman in that room hold her head up a little higher, and stand a little
taller.

She's established herself as a major power in the party, if not in American politics, and it's well-deserved. She certainly worked for it, and she earned it the hard way. This will be her lasting contribution to American history. This is no men's-only club anymore - thanks to her. She is a monolith and a pioneer and a leader and a force to be reckoned with. And she's established a template for women in the future to stick their necks out this far. Did you notice Gloria Steinem was in the audience? And longtime friends Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen? And more than a few little girls who will grow up accustomed to a political world in which women stand as full equals. Hillary boldly went where no woman has gone before. It's an historic day. For African-Americans and for women of every color.

37. The speech missed one HUGE, important point
She needed to hammer home--repeatedly--how John McCain is against everything she's ever worked for. Universal health care. Women's right to an abortion. And on, and on, and on.

By not doing so, she completely failed to remind people of why they need to vote for Obama instead of John McCain.

And for this reason, her speech failed. All the pretty words in the world don't matter one whit, if you don't slam home the most important point: That voting for John McCain isn't a protest vote, but a vote against everything Hillary has ever worked for.

43. But this was the speech to encourage people to rally behind Obama
By not comparing him to Obama, or even her own record, HRC left a huge gap in what otherwise would have been a very good speech.

She'll never have an opportunity like this again, to reach out to her most die-hard supporters and remind them of how they'll betray HER if they vote for a man who's worked his whole life to undermine everything she stands for.

48. Excellent speech
yes. But we're being asked to ignore the most divisive campaign imaginable. She has damaged the presumptive nominee to the degree that she is obligated to help her supporters to accept him. It's not so honorable a position.

I just feel sorry that Hillary couldn't be as "big a person" as she comes off today all along...long before this particular "defining moment."

HRC's campaign was a huge disappointment. Her concession, no matter how eloquent, does not redeem her. I regret that she did not maintain the level of integrity that we need in politics. I wanted to be tempted at least to vote for her since we had a late primary. That certainly never happened.

I toast only to Hillary's endorsement of the better candidate.

77. Yes.
That $30 million will deliver 17+ million votes, MI, PA and maybe even WVA. Best goddam money the party ever spent.

Next question.

68. Any particular reason
That she said she was suspending, and not ENDING, her campaign? Does that make a difference to anyone or is that just semantics?

"Today, as I suspend my campaign, I congratulate him on the victory he has won and the extraordinary race he has run. I endorse him and throw my full support behind him."

79. I believe she can continue to raise money
that can go to both the party and the GE if she suspends her campaign. If she ends it, she cannot. It's semantics but also politically savvy for the financials in the party. (FYI - I got this from NPR but don't have a link - I may have misunderstood but you can google to correct me if you wish.)

71. It was a fine speech. and
delivered with apparent sincerity. I prefer not to second guess it. I have been extremely distrustful of Hillary, but have been wrong so many times in my long life that I am in no position to judge another.

At some point, "unless someday somebody trust somebody there'll be nothing left on earth excepting fishes." (Richard Rogers) I therefore choose to take her words today at face value.

75. It was an incredible speech! I watched a video of it here, and it stopped abruptly???
I wish I could have seen the whole thing. :-(

I supported Hillary in the Primary, but I've always liked Obama too. (As well as Biden and Edwards.) I have absolutely NO PROBLEM getting behind Obama in the GE.

Let's go cream that McBush bastid!
