I did not throw my support to Obama until after John Edwards dropped out of the race. Edwards was my first choice. For a time Hillary was actually my second choice. I always liked Obama, but my biggest concern was that he had never defeated a real opponent before (Alan Keyes did not count) and might not be ready for the full wrath of the GOP attack machine.
But then Obama won Iowa, and almost pulled out a win in Nevada, and won big in South Carolina. Edwards fizzled, and I decided to back Obama, thinking that if he could beat the Establishment candidate, the mighty Clinton machine, with all of their money and big endorsements and institutional support, then he would be ready for the Republicans this Fall. Super Tuesday was a draw, and then Obama won 10 in a row. Then Hillary hit back hard. She forced Obama to fix his weaknesses, forced him to be more specific about public policy and prepared him for the street fighting that is a presidential campaign.
Hillary fought him tooth and nail, root and branch, as is her style. She forced Obama to work under pressure, which is what he will surely face this Fall. She made him a more seasoned, disciplined and prepared candidate.
I thank her for that. She is a worthy opponent.
