Swift Boat Liar O' Neill - Caught in Big F'in Lie - Check this out!
From Monday 8-16 Cleveland Plain Dealer

http://www.cleveland.com/search/index.ssf?/base/isele/1...

An Ohio factory worker who was with John Kerry on a dangerous night mission 36 years ago in Vietnam said he has no doubt Kerry was grazed in a firefight and deserves his first Purple Heart for a combat injury.

"We were on about a 14-foot boat with an outboard motor. We started out, taking a guess, around 10 p.m. We were sup posed to sneak up and check sampans," said Pat Runyon, a 58-year-old grandfather from Eaton, a small southwestern Ohio town near the Indiana border.

Runyon, an enlisted man who served on Swift boats in Vietnam, was not a regular member of Kerry's crew.

<snip>

The small, flat-bottomed boat - Runyon called it a "skimmer" - carried three men - Kerry in command, Bill Zaledonis on a machine gun and Runyon operating the outboard motor.

Hardball Transcript from Thur 8/12

O‘NEILL: Well, his first Purple Heart was not on a ship. It was on a Boston whaler.

MATTHEWS: Right.

O‘NEILL: With him on the Boston whaler was Lieutenant William Schachte, now Rear Admiral William Schachte. He will tell you that he falsified that award, that the award was forged.

MATTHEWS: Answer?

HURLEY: This is dishonest.

There were three men on that boat that night, John Kerry, Bill Zaladonis, Pat Runyon, period, three men on that boat. This is part of irresponsible journalism, irresponsible reporting. There was no one else on that boat that night. And those men will tell you exactly what happened that night.

MATTHEWS: What happened?

HURLEY: They went into an inlet where they had been advised that there were V.C. using a crossing to traffic in contraband. They went in. They towed a number of fishermen and sampans out to a swift boat. The Boston whaler is a very small boat. It‘s a 14-to-15-foot boat. There were three of them in it. They went in under power, at some point, cut the engine and paddled in.

They encountered V.C.—they encountered Vietnamese fishermen, towed them back out to the swift boat for interrogation. On one trip in, the final trip in, they spotted V.C. crossing this inlet where they were told there would be V.C. Kerry popped the flare, exposing their position. The V.C. began to run. They opened fire on the V.C. As they were exiting the inlet, Kerry felt—there was an explosion in the water and Kerry felt a stinging, burning sensation in his arm. There was no fourth person.

1. I hope that fucking O'Neill burns in hell for his lies.
There must be some way for some group to sue that bastard for slander and libel.

15. Not A Lawsuit...That's What These Assholes Would Want...
I've been upset on how this non-story has been covered and responded to, but I now sense the end of this one is at hand. If anything, the more these assholes shoot their lying mouths off now, the more they're being confronted with facts they can't refute or ignore. This will force them back into the rat hole they came from.

At one time I thought a civil suit may be in order to stop the slander, but give it some thought. A case could mean the subpoenaing of a laundry list of slime and liars and then the defense could call Kerry and even Clinton to the stand. Yep, create a circus...and since the wheels of justice move slowly, this would happen after the election and possibly right in a Kerry administration.

Let these rabid dogs spew their venom and we can effectively toss a lot of stuff at them now, and it looks like that's what happened.

I just wonder. A week ago, I posted a question to where Adm. Crowe, Wes Clark and the others were on this issue...seems like I spoke a week too soon, eh?

6. It's a fiberglass boat, about 16 ft, that will float even if sawed in half
Very very stable, very safe and maneuverable boat used for a lot of things to this day.

4. I think the not-so-swift vets are finished
First prominent Republicans are asking them to quit slandering Kerry, then it turns out O 'Neil lied about being a Republican, then Factcheck and other groups dig a little and find out the truth about these swifties, Kerry responds with proof that some of them have "flip flopped" (first they praise him now they damn him)

Plus it's totally backfired as of today since Kerry hit a homer by condeming the moveon ad against Bush, while the boy king has refused to condemn the swifties thus making himself look like the dumb ass that he is even with other Repubs telling him to condemn it.

And now this.

Party's over with this smear Rovey, better think of something else to take our attention away from the miserable failure you helped create.

I had no idea Kerry went through that much shit in Nam. These guys who are trying to slander him 35 years after the fact have got to be some of the most pathetic bunch of losers I have ever seen.

This crap is enough to gag a maggot.

12. hate to wet blanket this
BUT, they have the admiral's word

they'll just say it's his against theirs

they won't acknowldege anything

who's to determine whether the Douchebags for Fascism are lying or not?

it would be sweet to be able to prove it

I know who I believe, but, absent absolute proof.........

14. Where's this Shachte guy's proof he was there?
Is there a mission report with his name listed on it? Why would there have been two lieutenants on one small skimmer boat? And if he's claiming now that Kerry made it up, why did he let that go at the time?

Yeah, the haters will believe anything, but any person with common sense won't. Most people will assume that naval records are basically accurate, so this admiral better bring out the paper proof himself.

The problem here isn't the proof, which is abundant, it's the media that "reports" any old lady's gossip without even asking for proof.

http://mediamatters.org/items/200408060011

May 6: "Hoffman acknowledged he had no first-hand knowledge to discredit Kerry's claims to valor and said that although Kerry was under his command, he really didn't know Kerry much personally."

13. I was lukewarm on Kerry at first...
..but after getting to know more about him, and especially learning about his military service, I have become a life-long fan. He is one brave man. No one deserves the crap they are trying to pull on him. How DARE they attack him? I can't believe all of America have not turned against the GOP for these types of attacks. Someday.. someday..

up for what he did or have done the things he has done. I am hoping the Repub attempts to smear this service will only make more people aware of these facts.

18. Agreed
I was for Graham in the primaries (anybody remember him? sweet old guy, voted against the war ;) ) and didn't think much about Kerry on way or the other.

Then I read his congressional testimony, and it was eye-opening. I'm in the middle of Tour of Duty and while it's true that it's an extremely positive portrait, if you strip that out and just look at what actually happened, it's amazing. He's had quite a life.

They call him "ambitious" but basically what he's done is dedicate himself to living the American Dream just about as thoroughly as it could be lived. All kids think they'll grow up to be president, but few walk the walk like Kerry's done.

<"I saw a nice, quiet guy who knew he was in command and didn't flaunt it. He could make a decision, and he made the right one because we got out of there alive. That's all I can tell you." >

Now compare that to Bush.

Read the transcript if you doubt it. O'Neil never even trys to back up his claim there was a 4th guy on the boat. So we know he lies. So why should we trust ANYTHING he says?

28. O‘NEILL: "I‘m not a Republican from Texas."
MATTHEWS: Where do you live?
O‘NEILL: I live in Houston, Texas.
MATTHEWS: OK, you‘re a Texan. Have you voted Democrat recently for president?
O‘NEILL: Absolutely. I haven‘t voted for a Republican since 1988. As a matter of fact, I just backed the Democratic mayor of Houston, Bill White.
(CROSSTALK)
MATTHEWS: OK, so you‘ve voted—you‘re generally a Republican or a Democrat when it comes to voting for president?
O‘NEILL: It depends on the person, Chris.
MATTHEWS: Did you vote for Clinton?
O‘NEILL: No, actually.
MATTHEWS: Did you vote for Gore?
O‘NEILL: I voted for Perot twice.
MATTHEWS: OK. Did you vote for Gore?
O‘NEILL: I voted for Gore. I voted for Gore. I don‘t know really why I should go into my voting record.
