On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the highest how do you rate Senator Clinton's concession speech?

I'd say it was nearly as good as Obama's 2004 convention speech so a 9.

36. to be fair
she can't really diss her supporters . . .
I was hoping she would say something like: Those who honor her values must now give support to Obama.
I was initially a little disappointed in the overall, thinking she spent too much time on herself. But she was talking to her supporters not Obama's, and it had to be that kind of speech.
She had people cheering to support Obama, so I guess it worked.

And thank the mods for that. I still think that the majority of the bashers from either side were people who came here to stir shit up. Too many of them had 1000+ post and had been here for 3 months. A very vocal minority- they will not be missed.

35. I thought it was a solid 9...

I've pretty much been 100% in line with most of your posts, so I thought I'd note this slight difference.

I would have liked her to directly address those hoping to elect her in 2012 by invoking "the fierce urgency of now" and saying that the current economic threat to their lives and the physical threat to the lives of the troops are more important than any future career ambitions she could ever have.

And yes, at least a single point that Senator McCain poses a threat to the issues she's been fighting for.

Even so, you could almost see the bile creeping up in her throat during the Obama section of the speech, and the way she frequently looked down as she talked at that point. Even the SNL skits about her played on the fact she has such a tough time talking about the accomplishments of her adversary. I'm sure this was the toughest speech of her life, and that bile creep look was very understandable.

So many people have noted that she's at her best when she lets her guard down and her feelings show. If she had gone through the Obama section with a big, cheesy grin, it would not have worked nearly as well. Beyond the actual words she spoke, it might be more important that she got the ball rolling slowly and steadily. If she had launched out of the gate for Obama, she might have left more of her supporters behind.

44. I agree with MSNBC that the "rally the troops for the other candidate" speech is...
the hardest one could make. Most usually break down when they try to do even half as much as Hillary did. Hillary handled this about as good as I could imagine. Considering how much she truly wanted this, I cannot imagine her being more graceful here. I give it a full A+.

By far, her best, IMO. Particularly about 18M holes in the glass ceiling, and my favorite, the line about having a woman or African American running for President no longer being remarkable, and that being remarkable.

That was one for the books.

Way to go Hillary. I'm so glad to be proven wrong, and so glad to have you on our side!

46. No.
Hillary Clinton spoke emphatically about herself but robotically, and insincerely, about Obama. When her words praised Obama, her voice was dreary, her pace plodding, and her face glum. I don't blame her, considering her plans have come to naught. But I don't admire her for it either.

Watch it again.

I would give it a three. I haven't voted. Maybe the people who gave her a 1 are simply tired of the groupthink around here.

Truly, I don't get the lower grades, unless they are McCain infiltrators. I cannot imagine how she could have done it better. She seemed to strike the right tone throughout, and more importantly, lead her most fervent followers on a chain of reasoning that leads right to Obama.

because I never give anything 10/10. Heck, I don't give the Dalai Lama 10/10, so she did pretty darn well by my lights.

I don't agree that she was dragging or self-absorbed; this was the end of a very long and intense year and a half and there was emotion there that has to be honored. I don't know how anyone could ask for a more clear cut and unequivocated statement of support for Barack.

If a couple of dummies like you and me spot that, how's she going to convince the moneybags who support Obama that they should help pay her debts?

'Nother thing I don't understand is that how can the candidate who goes into debt running for president do a better job with the nation's economy than the candidate who ends up with enough to lend the candidate who poorly managed the campaign?

She said what she had to, but that sing-song tone of voice at the refrain "and that's why we have to elect Barack Obama" sounded sarcastic.

Her going on & on about her FORTY YEARS (wasn't it 30 before?) of experience came perilously close to her "McCain and I have a lifetime of experience, but Obama doesn't" jabs -- which will be used against Obama by the Repugs. Thanks for nothing once again, HilLIARy.

That's the last time I'll EVER hear her voice. She's dead (muted) to me now.

66. I'd give the speech writers a 10 and HRC a 9.8. I imagined her doing a "wink-wink"
I don't need flaming, just reassurance. I'm old-fashioned and believe in the old adage, "look before you buy."

The Clinton campaign needs lots of money to pay off her huge debts, possibly even to pay salaries. The more supportive she and her staff are to Obama, the more likely his well-heeled supporters will pull out their checkbooks. Many of them have not reached their maximum amount unlike HRC's supporters.

Hopefully - not a dime till AFTER the convention....and no more talk from them about vice president selection......

It's been said on tv that Obama can't allow his campaign funds to be used because his small amount donors would not allow using it to help HRC. Also, some law may even prohibit it.

It was pointed out to me here in DU that it was common practice for the winner to help the loser pay campaign debts in exchange for throwing their support. If the support is sincere, it's a good investment.

72. 7. Better than adequate.
Not a grand slam but a very decent triple.

(Apologies for the baseball analogy.)

73. Giving just do respect and praise to others is not her strength.
It was a vast improvement over the speech she gave Tuesday night.

She should have:
1) apologized for not conceding properly Tuesday night and for stepping on the victory meant for Obama and his supporters
2) spoken words against McCain
3) told the truth and apologized for any one of the many things she has said and done during the race
4) denouce her supporters support for McCain and their boos of Obama

She is not Obama but she could certainly learn a lot from him.

If she had delivered THIS speech on Tuesday and had not run the type of campaign that she did, this speech would not be all the rave.

The rave is in direct response to the big unknown of would she, could she do the right thing.

So with full recognization of her faults and limitations I gave her an 8 for saying what she needed to say, much better than I thought she would.

75. You know, I've been a pretty harsh critic of Hillary throughout most of this primary season..

..but I must admit, I was pretty impressed with her speech today! I mean, I, like everyone else, knew she would be doing this today, but I have to say I was pretty surprised at just how enthusiastically she did it! And while I've had my issues with Hillary during a lot of this primary season, I have to admit that I admire her for putting so much heart into a speech, under which circumstances, she obviously did not want to give. It reminded me of why I had liked and admired her so much before all this in the first place and I think if she continues down this path, the chances of that so-called "dream ticket" will greatly increase! ;) Not that I think she will or should be his first choice, but it just seems a whole lot more probable after today than it did before. It will, of course, depend on how she (and Bill) conducts herself in the time to come. But either way, if she keeps THIS up, she will be a great asset to the campaign!

I voted 10. :)

82. 80% or so
There was a lot more "me" and "I" in it than in previous concession speeches I've heard, but my mom says I wouldn't understand since I'm not a woman.

83. Given the difficulty of having to
give a concession speech, I have to give her a 10. She said she will work hard to get Obama elected, and asked her supporters to do the same. No more could be asked of her.
