3. What other recent presidents have had a grandparent still living
when they were inaugurated?

I imagine this is fairly rare.

8. And to have BOTH! Strong genes, definitely.
My dad's mom died when I was in the 7th grade and my grandmother passed away in 2003 when I was 19. :(

11. Yeah, she's not. It's one of Barack's grandpa's many wives.
But still, pretty amazing!

24. Then link is wrong. The biological mother of Obama's father is not Sarah.
His biological grandmother "left for the city" leaving her children behind with Barack's grandfather and his other wives. Sarah was one of these other wives. She is not his biological grandmother.

Obama's father also had several wives. The first was Kezia who he married when she was 16 and who he left in Kenya with their two children when he went to Hawaii to attend college. There he met Obama's mother, a young student, was was pregnant with Barack, Jr. before she was 18. At Harvard, Barack, sr. met and married Ruth who returned with him to Kenya and with whom he had two sons. During this same time, Obama Sr. fathered two additional children with Kezia and probably at least one more with another women. Ruth and Kezia are said to have found out about each other when Obama Sr. was in the hospital following one of many drunken wrecks, this one causing him to lose his legs. (A later one cost him his life.)

Kezia lives in the UK with several of her children. It is a complicated family, to say the least. There has been a lot more coverage of it in the UK press because many family members now live in the UK and because of historic ties to Kenya. Try searching on "Kezia obama" for a start.

BTW the RW is pushing the claim that follwers of Obama's cousin Odinga, the opposition leader, were responsible last fall for the massacre of people, mostly women and children, who had sought refuge in a church.

5. Mama Sarah, 86, will be there in January! Here...

"Barack Obama’s success will inspire us all to break the shackles of ethnic preoccupations in determining political leadership," Raila said in a statement by his spokesman, Mr Salim Lone.

Obama’s grandmother, Mama Sarah, 86, led villagers of Alego Kogelo, Siaya, where the senator’s father — Barack Obama Senior — was born, in thanking American voters for nominating her grandchild.

At the home of Obama’s father, relatives, neighbours and students celebrated the triumph, whose campaign now promises to capture the psyche of Kenya in the run up to the presidential elections.

Mama Sarah spent most of on Wednesday morning talking on the telephone to her relatives in America, UK and South Africa about Obama’s victory against Mrs Hillary Clinton in the hotly contested primaries.

"I will travel to America to witness his swearing in because I know he will win. But I will not stay in the country for long," she said.
