WASHINGTON - With his Democratic foe now certain, Republican John McCain is deploying dozens of staffers into battleground states, boasting of improved fundraising and expanding his advertising into some of the most competitive terrain of the general election.

1. I hope the 50-state strategy comes through for us this year.

2. I'm starting to feel that his campaign doesn't fully understand what it's up against.
A few republicans do, and have written Cassandra-like warnings about what'll happen in the fall. Here's to hoping McCain continues to be clueless and out of touch.

7. He's never had to run a tough campaign--they really don't know what they are up against.
His Senatorial campaigns in AZ (he's been my rep for my entire voting life) have been walks in th apark and his staffs consist of locla old boys in biz, the press, and lobbyists.

17. Neither has Obama against a general election opponent.
Alan Keyes was who he was up against 4 years ago. Definitely a walk in the park.

29. McCain's never been in a single tough campaign. Period.
Edited on Sat Jun-07-08 01:12 PM by blondeatlast
HUGE difference. And this Obama supporter would have to give Hillary props for a VERY tough campaign.

Obama's ready for this, McCain is going to be shellshocked by this--and I can't wait for it.

Obama Leads in Laying Campaign Groundwork
Big Spending Edge Presents McCain With Uphill Fight
By B Y CHRISTOPHER COOPER
June 7, 2008; Page A4

As the race begins between Barack Obama and John McCain, the Democrat is far ahead in laying the groundwork for a national campaign.

Federal records from February through April show Sen. Obama has outstripped Sen. McCain in spending for a campaign's most-important functions -- a staff of field directors to round up volunteers and get out the vote, a chain of local offices to call strategy and dispense paraphernalia, and a robust advertising and direct-mail schedule.

Reuters
Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama smiles during a Chicago 2016 Olympics rally in Chicago Friday.

Sen. McCain, by contrast, has done little advertising, has a much leaner ground army, and is fielding only a handful of campaign offices ahead of the general election.

The mismatch in spending for the building blocks of a national campaign comes in part because Sen. Obama has had to pour resources into an intensive nominating battle far longer than Sen. McCain, who effectively sealed the Republican title four months before Sen. Obama sealed his party's nod this week. But the extended primary battle could benefit the Illinois freshman senator in November, because he has a ready staff in several key states and has built his name-recognition. The disparity also exists because Sen. Obama has been a far more-effective fund-raiser than Sen. McCain.

13. I think they might 'get' it, but to do anything in comparison to what
Obama has done has got to be daunting, especially because they've had lots of time and haven't done anything of note. I found it humorous that gramps 'stole' visuals and phrases from Obama's campaign. That won't get him far, and it's obvious what he's doing.
