***** Official "YAY, HILLARY" Thread! *****
Everyone seems to be posting individually, which makes it difficult for us to read everyone's comments. Why not one thread to make our feelings known?

My comment: This speech was beyond excellent, delivered with grace, style, passion and true patriotism! :applause:

85. Why would you use a symbol associated with White Supremacists in your posts?
The Celtic Cross is closely associated with the White Supremacists... You might wish to re-evaluate your use of their favorite symbol...

113. What does having been there since '07 have with anything?
It's like the Swastika. Yes, it was a Hindu symbol, and within that context it meant something very different from what we're used to, but frankly a symbol which is on pretty much every Klan member's uniform should not be used, whatever its other meanings.

Or is it OK to use the swastika, because it has other meanings than its Nazi one?

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celtic_Cross, under "Political Symbol".

I got it stamped on my wrist last night at Petco Park so I could go through one of the food courts during the game against the Mets without showing my ticket. Does that mean I'm a white supremacist? Maybe the security guy who stamped my wrist, he's a supremacist? Oh wait, he was black. Never mind.

Like it or not. I used to face being beaten up back in the day, when I was connected with the Anti-Fascist League, working Against Skinheads who used to spray paint that symbol all over the place.

Look at any picture of Klansmen in "ceremonial" garb. Notice the little symbol on their chest... ring a bell??

144. This is the FIRST time I've heard of that in my entire life,
and I thought I knew something about symbolism. Didn't even know it was called a Celtic Cross. I guess I've never looked closely at Klan garb, because I've never made that association. Just looking at the symbol, I'd call it an equal-armed cross within a circle, which I always thought was a symbol of the four elements and/or a symbol of wholeness.

Isn't it also a symbol for earth...or something? All these racist associations are a brand-new and weird thing to me. I didn't think I've been living in a cave lately or anything, but I guess I have.

171. That's your problem, not mine. Educate yourself. Read wikipedia.
And go to the SPLC site to find out about White Supremacist and Neo-Fascist groups.

They are poised for a comeback, having found allies in the anti-immigrant movement. Lou Dobbs even had one or two members of neo-fascist organizations on his show. If you're not aware of these groups (I was involved in the fight against the late-80s wave of them), get aware of them. They're re-invading high schools as we speak...

This theme is the most common:

But all that aside it is a bogus arguement to simply equate the celtic cross with white power movements. The white supremacists appropriated all this shit, therefore the movement and the symbol aren't synonymous.

"""
Variations resembling the Celtic cross, and the sun cross ("sun wheel") from which it is derived (the same symbol from which the swastika is derived), have been adopted by some white nationalist, neo-Nazi and neo-fascist groups. The Celtic cross (usually with the arms not extending outside the circle) is used by these groups to symbolize the Aryan race. These supporters usually use a very simplified geometric variation of the design which is made up of simple lines, without any of the ornamental complexity of traditional Celtic crosses.

192. If you read it carefully, that statement
doesn't say that the Celtic Cross is the same thing as the Sun Wheel, just that it is derived from the Sun Wheel. It still looks different. In particular, the version he was using looks like the astrological symbol for earth and not like what you see on a KKK outfit. The difference is pretty darn obvious.

Seriously, check out symbols.com. The information is more comprehensive than wikipedia, and can't be edited by just anybody.

Its a gnostic cross which is connected to the gnostic gospels. It is also a Native American symbol of the four directions and four elements.

Hopi Flag

170. Are the Hindus Nazis? There are swastikas all over their temples
Of course not. That's not my point. My point is that symbol has been co-opted by White Supremacist groups, period. In a political context, it has nothing to do with Gnostics, or Celts (except indirectly), or even astrologers. It has to do with Politics.

I get that no one here meant it as a white supremacist symbol. I'm not an idiot. If you read my other replies, you'd know that. BUT IT DOES NOT MATTER. It's the OFFICIAL symbol of the KKK. It's been used by every White Skin I've ever encountered as their symbol.

What you're all saying is, in effect, that it would be quite alright to use the Swastika, since it has other meanings than its Nazi one. Of course you don't think that's the case, no? But the problem is that there is no difference between the Swastika and the Celtic Cross. They are both symbols which were co-opted by hate groups. They were tainted for the foreseeable future by that association.

And the fact that a group of liberals would simply be that ignorant of a very significant fascist movement in America is shocking to me. I suspect most of you are pretty young: groups like Aryan Nations and the Armies of God were quite active in the early 90s; the latter even got involved with a little act called the OKLAHOMA BOMBING! Go to the SPLC site, and educate yourselves, please.

Is this whole thing relevant here? yes. Unfortunately, Hillary has attracted a number of outright racists to her cause. They usually hang out at No Quarter, mind you. But frankly, I wouldn't want anyone to think that they had made DU their home...

I am all for reclamation. We shouldn't let some idiotic fuckers take from us a symbol, any symbol, that means something to us. These symbols all meant something to groups of people well before the fascists tried to take them and I say we don't let them have whatever symbols they want. BTW I used to do anti-fascist work as well.

191. If you honestly see no difference, you are beyond hope
The Nazis laid waste to three-quarters of Europe, slaughtered upwards of eleven million civilians (including between half a million and two million of my kin) and dragged the whole world into war, tainting the swastika/manji for the foreseeable future.

The white supremacists are a collection of mouth-breathers and cretins who manage to kill the occasional poor sod and are otherwise ignored.

Slight difference there. That said, if you'd like to start a campaign to reclaim the swastika/manji, let me know and I'll sign up. If idiots can co-opt the symbol, sensible people can reclaim it. The Klan's use of the cross doesn't make it racist, nor does the fascist's use of the fasces.

138. In astrology
Edited on Sat Jun-07-08 09:09 PM by Cherchez la Femme
it's called the Point of Fortune , a very auspicious marker, and very telling in regard to the Zodiac's psychology (the victim's ultimate point of fortune).

***edit:
And, in that regard, there is no shame in using it. It predates any supremacist usage by at least a thousand years.
The swastika predates the Nazi's by multiple millennia, yet it appears to be ruined as a very positive symbol (outside of the Hindu religion).
However, much like never naming your pet "Lucky", as a symbol of luck it seems to be the opposite: the swastika was the special 'lucky' symbol of the last Czarina of Russia -- wherever she went, she would scratch the symbol, using the imperial diamonds, into window panes of palaces/homes/hotels she was visiting or staying at. Many such panes are extant still today.

In any event, in astrology, the Point of Fortune is not going away because one psychotic group co-opted it; it's usage is intrinsic to the art.

See my previous post. I mentioned the association with the four elements, although I didn't use the word "Gnostic" in that post. What I call a "Gnostic cross" is the Bollingen cross, the one that looks like a Maltese cross with the arms ending in circles. It's also a quaternity symbol.

Ive been given shit about my Mjollnir tattoo, because white supremacists use it. But the symbol happens to resonate with me, and it has a great deal of meaning unrelated to skinhead gang culture.

The skinheads have appropriated a lot of preexisting symbolism and used it as a cover, in order to make it look as though there is meaning below their brand of shallow hatred. Why should we cede our favorite symbolism to them? I don't see Christians abandoning the cross just because it was used by the spanish inquisition.

151. that is the oldest symbol in the world, "transmits energy of the goddess"
CIRCLE (quartered): The sacred circle filled with a cross, four equal lines pointing from the center to the spirits of the north, east, south, and west -- or to the basic element: earth, water, air (or wind), and fire. In Native American traditions, it forms the basic pattern of the MEDICINE WHEEL and plays a vital part in major spiritual rituals. Many contemporary pagans consider it their main symbol for transmitting the energy of the goddess. (See sun wheel) Churches have used variations of the same popular shape, usually calling it the Celtic Cross.
http://www.crossroad.to/Books/symbols1.html

Just so you know. That the white supremacists use it doesn't take away from it's original intent. The "Celtic Cross looks more like this:

BTW, HRC's speech was one of the best speeches I've heard in years. MLK's "I have a dream"is my very favorite though.

172. I repeat: I KNOW ALL THIS.
"That the white supremacists use it doesn't take away from it's original intent. "

Yes, it does. Sorry, but it does: it's called co-option. It happens all the time. The Swastika went through the same association. It'll take centuries before the association between the Nazis and the Swastika loses its semiotic binding. The same is true of the Celtic Cross.

As for contemporary "pagans", I really couldn't care less. I've known quite a few of them: most are into it as an excuse to get laid. The intellectual sophistication of your average "pagan" is no different than that of your average new-age boomer. There are exceptions, of course, and but they would never use language like "main symbol for transmitting the energy of the goddess". That's just a load of BS, on par with crystals and channeling.

The Celtic Cross is a multi-valued symbol, just like ANY OTHER. Every single symbol has multiple meanings, and one can argue that no symbol, outside of any context, has ANY meaning whatever. The symbol itself is nothing but a few lines... The Celtic Cross means the Earth ONLY in an astrological or astronomical context, and in no other. It has a Native American value ONLY in the context of a discussion of Native American culture.

BUT: In a Political context, especially one where RACE has played a significant role, the Celtic Cross' association with Racism and Fascism is CRITICALLY IMPORTANT. And DU is nothing if not a political web site, and this is a Hillary thread. Hillary, whose husband tried to play the southern strategy....

189. actually, Wiki says it's the "Sun cross" - ancient indeed and very interesting origins
the reason I found this particular symbol so interesting is that there's an area on Mars that is shaped exactly like this symbol. The European Space Agency's Mars Express took a picture of Aureum Chaos, an area which shows this.
The actual picture is way too big to post here but I did find a smaller pic on another website:

More pics here:
http://www.dlr.de/mars/desktopdefault.aspx/tabid-4547/421_read-1324/

I was so blown away from seeing that image, I had to study it and indeed, it goes way back before neolithic culture! Here's a snip from Wikipedia about it:

"The sun cross, a cross inside a circle, is one of the oldest and most widespread of symbols. The Neolithic symbol combining cross and circle is the simplest conceivable representation of the union of opposed polarities in the Western world. Crossed circles scratched on stones have been recovered from Paleolithic cave sites in the Pyrenees. At the most famous megalithic site in Scotland, Callanish, crossing avenues of standing stones extend from a circle. Scratched into stone or painted on pottery, as on that of the Samara culture, the crossed-circle symbol appears in such diverse areas as the Pyrenees in Old Europe, the Anatolia, Mesopotamia, the Iranian plateau, and the cities of Mohenjo-daro and Harappa in the Indus River valley. It may be compared to the yin-yang symbol of the Eastern world."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_cross

Having Anthropology as my major in college, I've always found symbolism to be a very engaging subject but to see that symbol on the surface of Mars? Well now, that is a mystery!

Just saw a repeat of it on CSPAN. For the life of me, I don't know how she could get through that speech dry-eyed. I would have been a miserable puddle of emotion. Even softened my husband's heart. I was watching and said - "Damn! Love her or hate her, she's GOOD." And he said "yes, she is."

My hat is off to her. It was a graceful coda. She made me very proud to be an American woman, a mother, a daughter, and the mother of a daughter.

The late Tom Snyder once said "you're only as good as your last show."

On that scale, she was magnificent!

33. A GREAT speech ....
From a great Democrat ....

Nance ? ... THANKS for being level headed throughout this ordeal ....

I have been a supporter of ALL the candidates throughout, perhaps unwilling to split hairs for the sake of an ugly fight, and now; finally ... FINALLY: We can again appreciate BOTH Hillary AND Barack without starting a fistfight ....

There was never a gnat's hair difference between them, especially when compared to that other party, so I never saw a good reason to get ugly about the small differences ....

You stayed above the fray, and responded to all with wisdom .... THANKS for that ....

68. I only heard parts of it from here, but what I did hear impressed me
Edited on Sat Jun-07-08 01:34 PM by DFW
This can't have been easy for her to do, although I suspect once the decision
was made, it got a LOT easier to go forward with it.

I have only met Barack Obama once, and although I know the electrifying personal
charisma he exudes is impressive, I certainly can't say I know the guy enough to
say what I think of him on a personal level. I am certainly comfortable with him
as a presidential candidate, as I would have been with Hillary.

But for now, after letting the effects of the bitter pill of defeat sink in and
take their toll, Hillary is at least out there making a demonstration that she
will from here on in put her own presidential ambitions aside, and do all she
can to put Obama in the White House. That is good enough for me. That is the
Hillary I have wanted to see (again).

*edited for spelling because I can't proofread my own stuff to save my life!

She's my senator and I've never met her, though I did have the honor of seeing and hearing Bill Clinton speak, when he came to my little burg to campaign for our Congressional candidate in 2006. It was SRO, even in a red district, and something I will never forget. He's still got it, brilliant and charismatic...:D

And her speech was absolutely one of her best... She really stepped up to the plate, today.:applause:

100. I've met her a couple of times. She's actually more relaxed in person than on the podium
Edited on Sat Jun-07-08 03:53 PM by DFW
One time back in 1995, she was supposed to receive my parents at the White House
for a five minute cup of coffee (long story behind that). When the five minutes
were up, and her secretary came in to say she to do this and that, she said chuck
the schedule, she was having a good time with (my parents), and spent the next
half hour with them. I only met her for the first time ten years later. I always
had a hard time reconciling the person I had met with the person I saw running
such a flawed campaign. That first time when we had that photo taken, she put
her arms around me and my daughters like we were old friends. I realize all politicians
learn how to do that looking sincere, but somehow we knew it wasn't faked.

Her stiff, flawed campaign made it easier for me to remain neutral during the
primaries, but if by losing the nomination she has found the old Hillary from
before, then she has won something after all.

105. I agree, and that is a very cool story.
My cousin's FIL has met her, too, and said the same thing, that she's lovely and charming in person, but can get a little shrill when making a speech. My best friend's elderly father met her when she came to our neck-of-the-woods when she was campaigning for senator here in NY. He was the first to greet her when she stepped off of the bus and grabbed the poor woman. But she took it in stride, and hugged him back... :-)

You've truly gone out on a high note and delivered just the right finale to your campaign. Let no one accuse you of not being inspirational again. You see that we have to do: get a Democrat back in the White House and progressive ideals back in the soul of America! :patriot:

Missed the live speech, but just watched the video, and I just have to say WOW!

You did a fantastic job, and you are absolutely right: from now on, it will not be remarkable when a woman wins a primary. And I will say that it will also not be remarkable, because of you, when a woman finally DOES take the oath of office. It will be fantastic, but not remarkable, because of how far you went in blazing that trail!

Thank you, Senator, for your fighting spirit, for your compassion, for showing us that a woman is as equal to the challenge as any man!

99. Inspiring! Historic! Beautiful!!!
I didn't think anyone could meet all the expectations I had set up for Hillary. I wanted her to warmly endorse her rival, praise his accomplishments, give props to her supporters for their work and ask them to help her make sure Barack Obama got to the White House.

I swear to God she not only cleared all the imaginary hurdles I had placed in front of her, she did much more. Even though I didn't support Hillary, today she made me see the person so many of those who worked closely with her talked about. Warm, strong, smart, kind, feisty, and classy. She made me proud to be a woman, a Democrat and an American. The speech was well-written and beautifully delivered. She honored the hard work of her supporters, she put her candidacy in historical context, she stressed the importance of this election and she praised her rival for his grit and graciousness.

The fact that the circumstances must have put an incredible amount of pressure on her made her performance even more remarkable. There was no petulance or whining, it was warm and forgiving and loving.

I admit I was disappointed by her failure to acknowledge Obama's victory on Tuesday night. I thought that that omission made this formal endorsement more vital to Democratic healing than it had to be. I thought that Hillary, despite her obvious skill as a speaker, wouldn't be able to meet the nearly impossible task of convincingly pleading Obama's case while showing her gratitude to her supporters for their devotion to her campaign. Boy, did I underestimate her!!!

She looked good. She sounded as sincere as I've ever heard her. Her courage and stamina amazed me. I would have been in tears. She made me so proud of my party and my country. I was the one in tears.

Applause!!! Applause!!! Brava, Hillary!!!!

it was pretty good and surprising... I'll say that. She could have been like before, and before, and before... but she wasn't! And that was refreshing. Maybe, just maybe, she'll come out swinging for the next 5 months on behalf of the Democratic party ---

and her first swing should be a great response to the current commercial the RNC is running where she said Obama had a speech he gave, whereas McCain had a lot of experience that he'd bring - maybe say it was bad experience/decisions - cuz the GOP LOVES that comment of hers.

For allowing me to revel in the possibility of a Madame President.

I started off as a Hillary supporter, and although I didn't finish up that way, I can't help but feel sadness at having her come so tantalizingly close to breaking the final glass ceiling only to fall just short. Any woman, regardless of whom you supported in the primary, can certainly understand the disappointment. Any woman, and any man as well, can appreciate the pride I feel as a woman that Hillary won so many primaries. No one will ever again doubt that we will have a Madame President. It is a matter of when, not if. For that, Sen. Clinton, and for your call for unity today, I applaud you. :applause:

Thank you for saying what needed to be said, thank you for repeating it until you got the very unhappy who chose to boo to stop and cheer - or at least stop boo-ing.

Thank you for doing what had to hurt your heart to do. It hurt me to watch. But I appreciated it and I think the Democratic party is on the road to victory, with your help.

It won't be easy. But the long primary (though I hated it) was a good thing. It kept the candidates in focus and made McSame seem like the barely tolerated uncle no one wants to visit in the nursing home. The primary helped to hone Obama's skills, showed the strength of his organization and got SO MANY people out and involved. Even I, single mom always looking for a minute to sit down and relax, got up off my butt and canvassed for his campaign in NC.

It won't be easy. But...

YOU'RE DAMN RIGHT WE WILL!

I want to go back to admiring Hillary Rodham Clinton, as I did throughout the 90's instead of being horrified and sickened by the person who came to visit in these last few months. I never again want to have to say, with regards to HRC, "She did NOT say that!". If her actions mimic the words she spoke today, she will once again become a person I admire. The person who spoke today is the one I remember.

Nance, I should have known it would be you who would start such a thread. One day, I hope to meet you in real life. If you're ever in Seattle, you'll always have a place to stay.

Over the years I have watched you take more than your share of criticism and yet you never faltered. You never lived your life seeking approval, you took chances and did it your way. Just amazing. I cried through that speech. Made me proud to be a Woman, a Democrat & an American. It really touched my heart, when you spoke of the women who came before you, and their struggles. You honored them, and you did them proud. Was wonderful to see your family & supporters honor you. After that speech, I truly hope you are considered for vice president.
