1. it's a bad habit that tells a lot about the person
"They can wait" is the message it conveys.

There's no excuse for being chronically late.

that's silly
it says very little about a person other than that they are late.

I've known plenty of folks who are outstanding performers, smart, and do their job well and pleasantly who are "chronically late" and I've known the opposite who are always on time.

I have no love for Clinton, and this is probably an event she should be on time for, but I'm not into psycho-analyzing people I dont know.

Your opinion is clearly uninformed and immature.

Grown ups arrive on time. The failure to arrive on time is an emotional problem.

59. Hey T.O., I'm on your side, but I'm also one of those people who is
chronically late. I know there's probably some pathology that I should have analyzed, but I have always received excellent job performance appraisals, except in that one area. So, I'll give her some slack in this regard.

I remember as a kid, literally getting beaten out of bed (LOL) because I'm a night owl. I'm famous for missing flights, or having to reschedule appointments. I'm not proud of this, but it's the one thing I haven't been able to overcome in my 50+ years. Bill Clinton is also famous for keeping people waiting. I agree with you that it's disrespectful of other people's time, but whaddya gonna do?

61. I would ask you to do some research on the topic.
Edited on Sat Jun-07-08 12:03 PM by TexasObserver
I don't want to try to sell it here, but if you will do some research on those who are chronically late, you will find that psychiatrists and psychologists do find it significant.

What does it say about me that I never arrive late at a meeting? It says that I developed a discipline early in life to always be on time, because I think doing so honors those with whom I meet. Being late is a way of saying "others can wait on me to arrive."

67. I agree with you about keeping others waiting. I should say that I've
been with my current employer for nearly 15 years, but a couple of years ago I had a run in with someone very high up in the company about something else, and suddenly my chronic tardiness became an issue. At that time, I seriously considered talking to a professional about this disrespectful character flaw.

Nobody wants to be famous for being late. Even though I have an understanding boss, and he tends to laugh off my tardiness, sometimes I get the feeling that even though he's laughing, he's also taking a jab.

I will, however, follow your advice about the research. It is something I would love to address.

75. I have a very specific basis for my position.
For much of my adult life, I appeared in court regularly. You never arrive in court late. If you don't show on time, you may lose. If you don't show on time, you may get fined $100 a minute by a judge. It's a system that says "if you're not on time, you'd better be bleeding somewhere on the side of the road." And the military was the same way. You are expected to be on time, and one minute late is a failure to meet your obligations. The judge can make others wait, but they can't make him or her wait. In that sense, he's the politician in that scenario. He can be late, even if you can't.

Being late is a way of saying "you have to wait for me, I don't have to wait for you. That's why doctors and lawyers often get away with being late for their patients/clients. Ultimately, it's a slight to those who show up on time, and I advocate against it. When a superior is on time for a subordinate's meeting, he or she is showing great respect for that person, and that person knows it. The same person also knows if they sit waiting for 30 minutes, they're not that important in the scheme of their boss' life.

There are many people in positions of authority who share my view about those who chronically arrive late. We do not always say it as explicitly as I do here, but I can assure you that those people look very harshly upon subordinates, colleagues, or co-workers who chronically arrive late. It's considered a deep seated character defect by those who view the issue as I do.

77. I couldn't agree more. I've been on both sides, as boss and subordinate.
And I agree it is a serious character flaw. I'm just at wit's end to know what to do about it at this point. There are nights when I stay awake, because of an important morning meeting (and I don't recommend this) but I spend the entire day in a zombified state, but at least I was on time.

But more importantly, I will forgive Hillary for her tardiness this time, because that was a magnificent concession speech.

index there right now is 96, this is leaving her supporters in a really uncomfortable position. I've been in that building and it's not the best building for circulation and temperature control. I can understand being late if you have a previous engagement that runs long or get caught in traffic or whatever, but this is her one big thing for the day. It is rude to leave these people hanging out in those conditions. I'm assuming there are also people waiting outside the building, and it's even worse for them.

What kind of an idiot sits on a toilet without looking at it first? Why is it any more work for a woman to put the seat down than for a man to raise it? Personally, I always put the seat AND the lid down, so it's not an issue. Or is that mean, because the woman has to raise the lid?

Unless something unexpected came up, you should be on time for these things. And if there is a reason, for fuck's sake -- someone get the word out with a new ETA.

Just common courtesy. But I'm not the least bit surprised at this. It seems like every "major event" has to draw out the drama as far as it will go.

52. When one treats human beings as a means to an end instead of an end in themselves ...
... we see this kind of disprespect and lack of empathy and consideration.

I'm a "tardyphobe" ... I DETEST being late. I detest "doing an OJ" at the airport. I detest causing others to wait for me. I detest pushing through traffic to make up time. It's dangerous. It's poor planning. It's poor personal management. When I make agreements, I keep them! It's a matter of integrity. I arrive for appointments ON TIME. If I'm "warehoused" in a doctor's, dentist's, lawyer's, or other person's office for more than 15 minutes, I make the offensiveness known and rarely return. I tend to make appointments for a time that's first thing in the morning or first thing after lunch, in order to make the maximum opportunity for timeliness.

I'd rather arrive early and wait, relaxed, than cut it close. I always make enough time to "smell the roses."

Tardiness is a huge pet peeve of mine. And as you say, tardiness increases chances of even more stuff going wrong because now you're in a rush mode. Just allow yourself plenty of time -- pretty simple from where I sit.

There are always consequences to poor plannning AND promises should be kept. I see no ethical 'salvation' in habitual tardiness. Yes, shit happens. Knowing that, we can prepare for it and leave time to overcome it.

56. Yeah, I have to admit I am buttwound about punctuality too.
Can't help it--it makes me screamingly nuts to be late for anything.

It also pisses me off to have to wait for somebody who is late. I'm tolerable for a couple of minutes past the arrival time, but much more than about five minutes and I honestly am probably better off to just go home or go ahead without the late person. It is disrespectful and just bad form.

Pols are often late while on the campaign trail and I have seen how it happens--everybody wants a bit of time with the candidate. Seems to me that being late is almost a failure of the campaign staff because they didn't build time into the schedule for "pressing the flesh."

YMMV.

60. I can accept being late for campaign events where
post-speech handshaking at one site can slow things down, but there is no reason for being late this morning!

It reeks of more grandstanding.

74. Oh, chill
Her supporters at the rally didn't mind, and those of us watching on TV lost nothing that we weren't losing anyway. I'm certain there was a decent reason for the delay - I imagine today might be one of the busiest days she's had since announcing her candidacy.

83. it's one of mine also, ESPECIALLY since I am so anal about
ME being ontime for stuff, often times arriving near my destination early and waiting around.
Her husband, Bill, was notorious for always being late also,if I remember correctly.

84. It's a peeve of mine too
one of the talking heads said that it was SOP for the Clintons, that they'd even been that way in WH days. I can excuse politicians cause shit does happen and they et thrown off schedule. Just saying though that in my RL I get really pissed when people are continually late and stealing my time.

87. I wonder how the world functioned before wristwatches and cell phones.
I think you'll have to be more tolerant of tardiness if you ever travel or work in parts of the world without the type-A-American attitude toward time.
