"What Will Be Hillary's Role?"

A Google web search on the term "Hillary's Role" yields nearly 7,000 hits. There're another 250-300 in a blog search, and about 700 on usenet.

A Google news search turns up a far smaller number, 129 to be exact, but sheds light on the courtier press's 16 year obsession with a woman who obstinately struggled to deny that same press their self-appointed mission to define that role.

I remember that question in 1992. The TV was on CNN, and the anchors were debating that question. I can't recall the exact conversation; mostly I remember thinking what a bunch of presumptuous blowhards they were for thinking they had any business to decide what her role should be.

This morning, on that same exact channel, the question arises yet again: what will be Hillary's role? This time, they are not asking what her role in a Bill Clinton presidential administration will be, but in a Barack Obama administration.

For every member of the hired press that asks this question and tries to define what they think it should be, there are 70 keyboard quarterbacks making the same attempt and I have no doubt she'll confound them, as well.

My guess, for now?

Whatever she damn well wants it to be.

She lost because she ran a Karl Rove style campaign. She's MEAN.

I see you need some time to come around as well. It discourse from folks like you that are going to make it more difficult for Clinton supporters to support Obama. The main theme we need to embrace is healing. Words like this do not help at all.

jobs seem to be out of immediate reach...Senate Majority Leader? Easily. Governor of New York? Possibly, although not for a few years. At this point, can any of us really know WHAT she wants? Does she even know?
