Gephardt Predicts Obama Will Win Working-Class Vote in November
Gephardt Predicts Obama Will Win Working-Class Vote in November Christopher Stern
Fri Jun 6, 1:27 PM ET

June 6 (Bloomberg) -- Blue-collar voters who rejected Barack Obama in the primaries will vote for him in the general election because they are deeply unhappy with President George W. Bush's policies and John McCain's message doesn't appeal to them, former House Democratic leader Richard Gephardt said.

``Barack Obama has a great message for middle-class working voters and I think those voters are going to come to his side,'' Gephardt said in an interview on Bloomberg Television's ``Political Capital With Al Hunt,'' to be broadcast today.

``A lot of them are very angry at George Bush and the Republican Party,'' he said. ``Republicans are in trouble with a lot of voters, even some Republican voters, because of the state of the economy, what's happened in Iraq, gasoline prices. You name it, they've got problems.''

McCain is failing to connect with the same voters, said Gephardt, who ran twice for president and had strong support from working-class Democrats. ``A lot of them are not going to be attracted to John McCain's economic message, which I haven't figured out yet,'' Gephardt said.

2. We've got to help get that message out to the voters.
This is such an important task. I hope we will be willing to get our butts out on the streets for this. We have to.

3. Racism still an issue
...and some will still never vote for a black man no matter what. We must factor this in.

4. You REALLY must be concerned.

That makes me happy.

6. hmm...
Whoever you think I am, you are mistaken. I'm just a black guy and I think sometimes white Obama supporters tend to underestimate the amount of subtle racism in this country.

You might even have people publicly claim to support Obama, but then freak out once they get in the ballot box and vote for McCain.

Then you have the extreme contingent of Hillary supporters. Their frustration at losing the primary causes repressed racist tendencies to emerge as soon as they see Obama. This contributes to their illogical decisions to sit out the election or even worse, support McCain.

7. If that is true
then I apologize. Lotsa zombies running around these parts trying to cause trouble in their own silly, pathetic way.

But I actually intended it to be applicable to either an honest "concern" or a troll. If someone is trying to disrupt, that means THEY are concerned that Obama will succeed. Which makes me happy. If, on the other hand, one honestly is pointing out the very real existence of racism and how it's an obstacle for some, I'm equally happy because we mustn't be complacent. I think we all know this is not going to be easy. Obama most of all. But we will do it.

9. Understood
Yeah, I gotcha. I read the post about "concern trolls" as you call them.

It just really annoys me because Obama and Clinton are soo close with respect to their policies. It just seems crazy to me that a professed Democrat would vote against him just because he is black.

I just want to know what he can do to help this. I mean if there is some way to assure them that he's not going to freak out when he gets in office and pass reparations or something like that.

The only thing he can do is go out there and confidently explain his plan to as many people as he can. I mean just deliver a positive, detailed message and ease up on constantly attacking McCain. Just explain what YOU are going to do and how it will help them.

11. Please understand that there are many who will not vote for McCain
because of his age as well as because of his policies.

Read this. I wrote it a couple of weeks ago. It is relevant to what you are saying: http://www.opednews.com/articles/opedne_frenchie_080517_how_in_the_general_e.htm

8. Even a moron can figure out that hating a black guy
Isn't going to make gas not be $4.00+ a gallon, our deficit shrink, or give them health insurance. The last vestiges of pure racism exist in areas where Obama wouldn't garner many votes to begin with, the rest of the middle class are just ready for some help

10. Wow, I see a bumpersticker in the making!
"Hating a Black Guy Won't Help You Pay Your Mortgage"

or maybe "Hating a Black Guy or Eating Cat Food: Your Choice in 2008"

:)

David Duke might disagree based on a technicality, but I think it gets the message across.

13. Consider this...
I live about 40 miles from Falwell country and my daughter-in-law is the preacher's daughter of a very fundy, Southern Baptist church. They hate everything liberal and George Bush was God to them at one point in time. My son recently attended a birthday party with several of these church members in attendance. He said his jaw almost dropped to the floor when he overheard them discussing the possibility of voting for Obama. They were quite serious and at one point one said "but he's a Muslim" to which another replied, "I don't care what he is...he's the only one who will change things in Washington."

If these people are willing to consider voting for Obama, I can guarantee you there's a major tectonic shift happening in this country right now. :D

14. According to this optimistic but not impossible
scenario, Obama could break 300 in November. Remember that there a whole lot of factors going on such as; McCain is old and boring, economic issues, those who want to end the war, 80% of US believes we are going in the wrong direction, energized Youth and African American voters, Bob Barr, and McCain has no base of true supports, i.e., the fundies hate him almost as much as they hate Hillary Clinton.....and the most important factor; those underestimating Obama and his message.
