Harold Ford gives Obama advice..."meet them where they work, play and pray."
I really think Barack Obama can handle his own campaign very well, thank you, Harold Ford. He has done a magnificent job with a great campaign team. What he does not need is advice from the chairman of a think tank, the DLC, that lost the last few elections for us.

He doesn't need advice from a man I heard was praising John McCain's campaign last week. He does not need advice from someone who sounds like a Republican on TV.

Newsweek:

Harold Ford's advice to Obama

Now he's got to get off the big stage more often and meet with people where they work, play and pray. That means getting out to schools and factories, coffee shops, fairgrounds and houses of worship. He needs to earn their trust.

Ford really needs to rethink what he is doing giving advice to the presumptive nominee. His comments are nice, but they are not needed now.

I have not forgotten the trashing Harold Ford gave to our DNC chairman on Imus in the morning in 2005. It was a vicious attack on Dean's religious faith, which is none of Ford's business.

Ford criticizes Dean's faith

Ford tells Imus he might ask Dean to resign.

June 9, 2005
Imus: "On another note here, speaking of the Democratic Party, which you are a member of, how's Howard Dean working for you?"

Rep. Harold Ford Jr.: "(Laughing) I won't have him down so many times in Tennessee on the campaign trail with me. He has made some comments as of late that really speak to a lack of understanding I think, of the country, a lack of understanding of faith and values. I'm a Democrat and I'm a God fearing one. I grew up in church..... I look forward to having a chance to sit with him here in the next day or so. I think he's going to be here in Capitol Hill a little later today to meet with us. I want to ask him directly. Can he contain himself in a lot of ways, and what is his thought process in a lot of these issues because it is not representative of where the party is."

Funny how that is just not true.

I believe Carville implicated the Clintons and Rahm Emanuel when he reiterated his wish that Harold Ford replace Howard Dean at the DNC because we did not win enough congressional seats...a statement just plain stupid on the face of it.

Carville says others knew of his attack on Dean and did not ask him to stop

Carville tells me, further pounding the wedge that divides the Deaniacs and the Clintonites. When I ask if Rahm agrees, Carville says, “It’s not any secret that Rahm has expressed disdain for Dean and not very secret that Rahm and I are close. It doesn’t take a lot of dot-connecting here.”

What about the Clintons, who, given Hillary’s presidential ambitions, have more cause for concern about who runs the DNC in 2008? “Let’s just say nobody has called me telling me this is a bad idea. Sometimes silence is eloquence.” Not only did Carville’s coup fail but it arguably strengthened Dean, who, speaking before his state-party allies, mocked the attempt as a desperate attack from the “old Democratic Party.” Cutting his losses, Rahm quickly leaked word to the press that he and Dean had negotiated a truce.

I get nervous seeing James Carville on TV since his tirades against Dean in 06. He called Dean's chairmanship "Rumsfeldian in its competence". He said Dean had turned the DNC into a "cult".

Since he specifically mentioned Harold Ford as the replacement, and not long after that Ford became chair of the DLC...I am still upset over Carville's use of Ford's name.

I am glad Obama is asking Dean to stay on, and I am glad he accepted. Dean might find the job too political later, but for now it is a great team.

Harold Ford needs to take his think tank and tend to his own business.

9. This is exactly the kind of reaction and behavior that is going to ruin
it for Obama in Nov. Just because a person did not or does not support Obama does not make that person a bad person who warrants the kind of disrespect and demonizing that goes on here from Obama supporters. It is so sad that there can be no dissent or debate here without ignorant rantings.

59. Well...
as much as I don't usually venture into GD: P...in my case, it was an inversive relationship. I did not support HRC because she surrounded herself with advisors and surrogates who I think to be scummy people and/or whose conduct during the primaries led me to that conclusion:

Mark Penn
Harold Ickes
Terry McAuliffe
Harold Ford
Gerry Ferraro (Honestly, I don't care about who she was...based on who she is now, she's a racist and there is no room in this party for her anymore.)

If HRC had won, I'd have held my nose to avoid the stink of her campaign and voted for her. Her personally I liked, just less than the four people I preferred over her...the rest of her staff I hope spends the rest of their careers in Abbaddon. Now that she's lost, I feel no compunction in saying that they were a cause and she deserved this outcome for not jettisoning them months ago. I criticized all of these people well before they were on Hillary's campaign, and I'm not going to stop now that she's lost. You know how mean-spirited and rude Obama supporters can get here in GD: P? That's these jerks off in the real world where it matters.

It is our duty as Democrats to call anybody attacking our nominee or our party on their bullshit. Harold Ford and James Carville opened themselves up for this criticism when they decided to wage a war to force Howard Dean into resignation. Politics isn't boxing, no referee is going to step-in and save them (nor should one); it's a bloodsport and now that they are on the canvas...I have no problem with wailing on them until they are politically-dead.

Obama is boss of the party now, especially the DNC. Dean was asked to stay on and the DNC was asked to take no more lobbyists money just like the Obama campaign. Obama has put a couple of his people there to represent his interests.

Here you go, great front page at the DNC.

During the Tennessee Senate primary, in his race against Montgomery County native

to haul campaign workers from Memphis to Clarksville for the purpose of stuffing
the ballot box of the straw poll held at the annual Montgomery County Dem's Labor Day celebration.

Oh, I forget, Home Depot's having trouble 'cause folks working in McD's are losing their homes and don't have money to put in all those cheap new bathtubs.

His strategy for everything is "don't make the Republicans mad."

  1. Voted for the Iraq invasion
  2. Voted for the bankruptcy bill
  3. Against same-sex marriage
  4. Against benefits for same-sex couples
  5. Pro-life, and in favor of restrictions on abortion
  6. Supported the Republican effort to intercede in the Terri Schiavo case
  7. Criticized Senate dems who attempted to filibuster Alito

We don't need any more Lieberman democrats.

Always has been, and so is his family. Long before the DLC, the entire Ford dynasty has been as slimy as it gets. He and Fred Thompson should be business partners. It would be a great fit for both.

But on this small point, he's right. GM is shutting down 4 plants in the great lakes region, and one of them being in Dayton, OH. If he stopped in the place for 15 minutes, told the workers who are about to lose their jobs that he would make sure to do everything in his power to stop these kind of massive layoffs, he would be the best friend of just about every union member in the state.

53. Prior to the Obama rally, Kerry's 2004 rally was the largest in Portland History
yet he didn't increase his percentage over Gore in Oregon, once the 2000 Green votes were factored in.

What that tells me is that huge rallies by themselves aren't the answer, either.

Harold Ford is a has-been in my opinion. It's like he abandoned his principles to get ahead on the back of the DLC.

I think Dean helped Obama more than anyone else both through the DNC and through his personal loss experience. They are both no fans of the DLC and Dean's personal popularity is a real advantage. Dean's support at DU is unquestionably very high.

I've given you two RW talking points already and if you're going to be willfully obstinate, I can't help you.

Nevertheless, here are a few others:

1)Ford criticizes Nancy Pelosi for being too liberal: http://dir.salon.com/story/politics/feature/2002/11/09/pelosi_ford/index.html

2)Ford calls Howard Dean angry and out of control: http://justoneminute.typepad.com/main/2005/06/harold_ford_mis.html

3)Ford "doesn't know who's been right about the war": http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/08/09/harold-ford-doesnt-know-whos-been-right-about-this-war-all-along/

Not to mention:

- Ford supporting Joe Lieberman vs. Ned Lamont and stumping for Chris Shays
- Ford going on Faux News and, when Hannity attacked Harry Reid for "betraying the troops," Ford's only reply was "I don't associate with Harry Reid"
- He is, after all, the head of the DLC.

on edit: forgot one more thing

Harold Ford - loud and proud on opposing gay marriage: http://washblade.com/2007/1-19/view/columns/McCullom.cfm

You've given me no right wing talking points because the term is not clearly defined.

So who defines it? You? The left wing of the party (clearly the least successful "wing" of the party electorally)?

Obama? Right wing talking points?

In a meeting with Chicago Tribune reporters at the Democratic National Convention, Obama said, “On Iraq, on paper, there's not as much difference, I think, between the Bush administration and a Kerry administration as there would have been a year ago. There's not much of a difference between my position and George Bush's position at this stage.” (Chicago Tribune, 07/27/04)

We can have dueling quotes all day. How about Ted Kennedy when backing Bush's "NCLB?"

You might do well to remember that no faction in the party has a monopoly on truth and what being a true Democrat is.
