Update on Kerry condeming Anti-Bush ad IT'S MAINSTREAM!
Edited on Tue Aug-17-04 06:43 PM by noahmijo
I KNEW it. I personally think this was a brilliant move by both Kerry's people and MoveOn.

MoveOn airs this ad on * getting the TRUTH about his service (or lack thereof) in the NG. People see it and you know it effects them however.

Then Kerry goes and condemns it.

Now what does this show? it shows Kerry condeming an attack while claiming issues should be the forefront with NOBODY having to egg on him to do so.

Bush, choosing to avoid the issues, refuses to condemn the swiftbum ads even with REPUBLICANS egging on him to do so.

Now this message is mainstream.

Kerry is on the side of class, * is on the side of smear and dirty.

Nicely done. Brilliant.

Oh and look * just got punked

Bush's campaign accused Kerry of hypocrisy.

See? now who would not notice the TRUE hypocrites here.....

1. But perhaps....
by condemning the moveon ads people will then believe that the ads cannot be true....when we know they are true and tell you about the difference between the 2 men?

4. But either way people have to talk about military service/experience
of the 2 respective candidates.

6. Ah but notice the way he responded
He didn't say whether they were true or not, he simply said we should focus on the issues and not attacks.

sly...but good.

THIS is what I was waiting for though, let it hit mainstream, it has to hit mainstream to really impact anything.

No you're right, but this is the first I've seen it hit the AP for all those cube rats and others out there who hardly watch tv but get their news from the net or newspaper.

9. If the ad generates controversy then it's done its job
Controversy means that people will be discussing the subject matter. We saw that with the "swift boat" ads.

10. Don't know how much good it will do. Repugs don't do nuance.
Nice move, but in order to "get it," you need to have a brain. Those still backing Bush may not qualify.

are obviously fargone. But you got those swing voters who will take notice of the smallest little events like this one...

14. So was the 2000 campaign
It's not what happens during the debates. It's what the "pundits" state, after the fact, what happened in the debates.

It was H.L. Mencken who said, "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people."

18. The 2000 campaign was very very different.
Bush was talking like a moderate publically, and Bush didnt really have a record to bring up. When he said he was pro-education, there wasnt much Gore could say in response. And Bush wasnt, himself, attacking Gore as much.

I dont think you can really compare the two elections at all.

20. Sure hope you're right K-W
I guess I just don't have much confidence in the people of this country. How else to explain that, according to polls, the country is split down the middle on this election.

How can anyone still be thinking about casting a vote for this knuckle-dragging Neanderthal?

23. I respectfully disagree...
It doesn't make us look weak at all. It makes us look like we're taking the high road and points out the fact that the other side is travelling on the low road.

25. Will it work?
The "Ask President Bush" events offers a highly public airing of unsubstantiated charges against Bush's opponent, Sen. John F. Kerry, that the campaign would never make directly.

And Bush doesn't jump to refute those.

For instance, in Beaverton:

"Q On behalf of Vietnam veterans -- and I served six tours over there -- we do support the President. I only have one concern, and that's on the Purple Heart, and that is, is that there are over 200,000 Vietnam vets that died from Agent Orange and were never -- no Purple Heart has ever been awarded to a Vietnam veteran because of Agent Orange because it's never been changed in the regulations. Yet, we've got a candidate for President out here with two self-inflicted scratches, and I take that as an insult. (Applause.)

"THE PRESIDENT: Well, I appreciate that. Thank you. Thank you for your service. Six tours? Whew. That's a lot of tours.

"Let's see, who've we got here? You got a question?"

Bush* actually has the power to get MoveOn to take the ad off -- all he has to do is condemn the SBV ad, and the ad just wouldn't make sense anymore.

Kerry can't tell MoveOn what to do--can't coordinate, you know.
