TALLAHASSEE — Early voting begins in Florida’s August primary election today without a decision on when the actual election can be held.

“Charlotte becomes real key in that, because they haven’t even located the supervisor yet, or the supervisor’s office,” Lt. Gov. Toni Jennings said.
Secretary of State Glenda Hood on Saturday canvassed election supervisors in other disaster counties.
Jennings said some of them, including Hardee County, thought they could provide a place to begin early voting. “They feel they have places. It may not be the supervisor’s office,” she said.
She did not know whether the primary could be postponed locally or, if delayed, that it must be delayed statewide.
“We’re going to have to research the law to see if there is anything,” Jennings said. “We’ve got a little time on that.”
Lee County Commissioner John Albion said he doesn’t think the Aug. 31 primary will be postponed because the most severe damage is limited to a few pockets, and moving it could affect the statewide election. Lee Supervisor of Elections Sharon Harrington couldn’t be reached Sunday.

“To me, if you take four or five counties, it can have a major impact on the outcome of a primary election,” Agriculture Commissioner Charles Bronson said.
“You certainly couldn’t release any results of any statewide election until those counties can vote or you could actually influence the outcome of the vote.”
“Given the fact that a lot of public buildings were hit, it’s possible the machinery may not being functioning,” Bush said.
