Good news re California Gay Marriage referendum
It seems certain the RW will get a proposition for a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman onto the November ballot. (Conservatives always say they love freedom but not when it involves sex or drugs.) It's been a bit of a worry because they love to push ballot initiatives like this in order to get the conservative vote out (notice they don't usually push such ballot initiatives in years when there are no national elections).

Well, bad news for the conservatives: a California field poll (conducted every year for the last 30 years) has this year found a small majority IN FAVOR of gay marriage, 51-42. Woot! Not a done deal by any means, but encouraging information nonetheless.

Opponents are trying to get an injunction to prevent implementation of the ruling until
they can get another measure on the ballot prohibiting gay marriage.

A-holes.

1. Is that all that's needed for a constitutional amendment?
The governor doesn't have to sign anything? the legislature doesn't have to do anything?

I didn't know you could amend the constitution by proposition in CA?

2. It's really not certain at all.
If anything, there's a pretty good chance that they don't have enough signatures (the petition was due before the court ruling.)

3. Get in on the November ballot by all means!
Just don't sneak a Constitutional Amendment onto a little podunk election like they normally do.

The RW tactic in California is to get these nutty ballot initiatives on primary or sub-primary elections, when Republicans have a heavier turnout than Dems.

I don't think we'll go for the Amendment at all, but particularly not if it's held on a real election ballot.

Civil rights for American citizens should not be left up to the people to vote on.

6. Well, of course, I agree, my point is just that if they're going to put it on the ballot
and they ARE, I'd prefer it on a General Election Ballot to a smaller ballot which, in CA, have much larger Republican turnouts.

Of COURSE, I agree that it's absurd to put it on the ballot at all, and Constitutional amendments shouldn't be treated like this!
