Has anyone thought of MIKE EASLEY as Obama's Vice-President?
Edited on Tue May-27-08 12:04 AM by musicblind
While he isn't my first choice (I think Clinton as VP would best pull the party together and help us win in Nov.) I would like to put forward, for DU's serious consideration, Mike Easley.

Mike Easley is the popular two-term governor of my home state: North Carolina. He is 58, he has his finger on the pulse of "blue collar voters" which he could help scoot along in their move towards Obama, AND he has endorsed Clinton (which would be a good way to pull in the Clinton demographic!) Plus he has loads of experience in the public eye. :)

Best of all... he could easily make NC a swing state! There are polls out there that seriously look as though Obama has a chance in this state after all! How exciting! If he chose Mike Easley then he could possible have a win in North Carolina. Thus putting NC's 15 electoral votes into the Democratic column. That is more electoral votes than Virginia, and more electoral votes than South Carolina. However, with Easley in the center of VA and SC he would have quick access to use his resources in both of those states to help pull them into Obama's category as well.

So what does DU think?

I also think Edwards would be a great VP.

1. hey
I like your thinking on this, however, what do you think of him saying Hillary "makes Rocky Balboa look like a pansy!". Also, is there some pending legal case regarding him? I may have that part wrong. Good rational argument by you about his strengths...

take care, musicblind! :)

2. and I'm an Edwards man, but would he take it
that's up for debate of course, and some say he doesn't really help Obama much of anywhere - but I say he does and rallied blue collar and poor advocates very well in '04 and during this cycle. He brings great knowledge and passion. I like Clark, Webb, Gov Strickland (OH), Biden, Richardson and a few others. If he wanted a lady, the best I think available is Napolitano or Sebelius.

5. If Hillary (as I'd prefer) does NOT get the VP nod, shouldn't Obama pick a woman, in realpolitik?
I also strongly feel that (a) the nominee should be someone who never supported the Iraq War Resolution (IWR), but (b) preferably has a LOT of foreigh policy background (ie both "experience" AND "judgment"), and (c) the notion that a VP nominee will automatically win their state didn't work in 88, nor in 04, and can't count on it in 08.

I also feel that it's about TIME we DID have a woman on a (probably) WINNING ticket. And a LOT of voters in the Democratic Party -- many of whom, even if reluctantly, will vote Obama anyway -- will feel the same way. Having a woman on the ticket turns reluctance and loss of some votes (eg to not voting at all) into enthusiasm among voters otherwise unenthused, which in turn draws in yet OTHER voters (social networks ...)

at least that's my theory and I'm sticking to it (to paraphrase SNL)

6. I am not opposed to that idea at all.
which women would you suggest?

Also, as I said at the beginning of my post, I do think Hillary would be the best VP choice at this point. Though if that doesn't happen Edwards and Mike Easley would be my second pick.

But which women do you like best for the job? Sebelius?

8. Easley is bland
A state lottery is his biggest accomplishment as governor, and he's shun national Democratic politics at almost every occasion. The one time he ventures into it, the Clinton endorsement, it delivers a big thud.

Not sure where the OP gets the term "popular" from.

9. I got the term Popular from CNN's own website
I posted the link above, but here it is again.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/05/26/veepstakes/index.html

I also get the term popular from personal observations as a citizen of this state. However those may very well be the people I am surrounded by, rather than the vast opinion of the masses. Haven't seen any polls on job approval ratings. But keep in mind, we want someone that is able to draw (at least in a small way) from both sides of the aisle... in order to win in Nov.
