Meeting with his traveling press pack on the long flight from Puerto Rico to Chicago yesterday, Obama said something that should not be lost during the holiday weekend.

"I don’t think so," Obama said, when asked whether McCain's age should be a factor in the race. "Senator McCain is healthy, he is campaigning actively all across the country, his doctors have given him a clean bill of health, I don’t think it should be an issue in the campaign."


Oops, a foot in Obama supporters' mouths. They were spinning McCain's medical records frantically trying to prove he's sickly.

I bet now they will change their minds. They don't have independent thought, after all.

PS- Its a political tactic and you know it. As if he'd come out and criticise McCain on health issues. Doesn't mean his health isn't a real issue in the real world where political sensibilities do not apply.

Rather than list all things which should not be an issue, here are some that SHOULD be (IMHO):

1. Whether we should plan on occupying Iraq for the next several decades, or whether we should immediately begin an orderly withdrawal.
2. Whether continuing cowboy bluster diplomacy is what we want, or whether smart diplomacy based on partnerships and shared interests is a better way to go.
3. Whether we should go full steam ahead with the oil-war-empire fantasy, or whether it would be better to develop alternative energy sources, green jobs and a world-citizen economy.
3. Whether a politics of fear, hatred and division will serve us well, or whether it is better to move toward a politics of confidence, shared respect and mutual interest.
4. Whether we should continue with the insane money-is-all health non-care policy we have today, or whether we should move quickly to universal coverage including expanding Medicare-like programs.
(Feel free to add others, if you can think of any.)
