67. "You" is related to Obama...HOW?
How is that a pro-Obama cover, other than in your fanatsies?

How is a Time cover from 1942, BEFORE HE WAS BORN, something to do with Obama?

It shouldn't need spelling out, but clearly it does.

Incidentally, I only got the dreaded red X for the last cover. What was on it?

73. That's a little bit of a stretch...
Because they say Obama raised money from small donations, the Time magazine man of the year for last year - "You" - is really about Obama? Yeah, that needs spelling out. If a thread is going to have covers about Obama, fine; but just taking a cover and saying it is about Obama because it's a positive message and someone likes it is fanatical.

And the red x was a cover of Time from 1942! What was that supposed to be, a prediction that Obama would be born in 20 years?

75. It's not DIRECTLY about Obama
I think Frenchie is saying that Obama's candidacy is part of the more participatory society that the "You" cover was celebrating.

76. And that's still a stretch, and a bad one.
EVERY candidate has a core of people working for them, donating their time and energy to the campaign. Obama is hardly unique to the "participatory society". The cover isn't directly about Obama, or indirectly about Obama or anything to do with Obama than any other candidate. It's bad enough to start including covers and claiming they are about Obama just because someone likes the cover, but then when I asked a legitimate question about why those covers were included, I was insulted.

79. Because it is the Internet - 21st Century Technology
and Senator Obama's campaign, win or lose, has forever changed how national campaigns will be run in the future.

Rapid response, internet support, use of modern-day tools, online fundraising, online phone-banking, people-powered (1.5 million contributors and still growing...), enabling individuals, removal of top-down political structure...

Just to name a few.

A major failing of Camp Clinton was they never were ready on Day One through Day 151. They created an old-fashioned, top-heavy, highly-paid, centralized, DC-insider structure which worked 20 years ago, but in this case did little more than squander huge sums of money.

When confronted with reality, Camp Clinton never did (or never could, your choice) react in a quick enough or broad enough way.

This has been a generational conflict campaign cycle. One reason (not the only one though) youth have been so captured by Senator Obama has been his ability to communicate one-to-one.

The Internet is this century's campfire, this century's door-to-door contact.

Dreamers like Howard Dean, the creators of THIS board, Markos, Atrios, Ron L, and a few more saw this potential years ago. Howard Dean almost harnessed it. Well-aware of where his effort failed, Team Obama took the concept and refined it.

Win or lose, the infrastructure of Team Obama has been something incredible to watch as it has evolved and grown. Watching others try to catch-up has also been interesting.

So this week Bill is whining that the problem is we don't show Hillary "the respect she deserved."

He has one part right. The past tense. Throwing more money after a flawed structure was not the answer. Paying people like Penn millions of dollars wasn't the answer either. Replacing him with other millionaires hasn't seemed to improve things either.

Is it any wonder that the billionaires who have pulled the strings of this party for years are screaming now? They see it and don't know how to deal with it either.

The YOU cover is probably the one which most defines Team Obama.

82. That at least is a lucid discussion. Thank you.
I don't agree with the premise that it is a cover about Obama. It is instead a cover about how people are using different tools to change how society responds and behaves. Even if the Obama campaign is taking more advantage of the new ways of organizing, it still isn't about the campaign.

87. The "you" cover is exactly about what the Obama campaign represents.....
even if you differ in your opinion.

If 99% got it and you didn't, then I'm ok with that.

1.5 million donors and the use of the Internet is exactly what that first cover is about, as well as what the Obama campaign is about. The commonality is not an accident, although you are trying hard to deny it. You say you got insulted? Well, I'm sure that the Hillary Campaign would say the same thing......so get in line as you are a prime example of all that went wrong with the Hillary campaign....they refused to see the direct connectivity between the people, the Internet and the Obama campaign.

In otherwords, this thread was created for the appreciation of those who have an uderstanding about such matters.

Those who don't will have to sit on the sideline clueless and wait for the history books.

96. Well, you were a rude pig to me for no reason, and I'm not OK with that
Edited on Tue May-27-08 07:18 PM by EstimatedProphet
And the reason you are a rude pig is because you have decided that I am a Hillary supporter, which I am not. I don't care who wins the nomination, I am voting for the winner, because the alternative is to elect McCain. I didn't campaign for anyone, certainly not Hillary, so it is ridiculous to claim that my I am what went wrong with the Hillary campaign. The cover is hardly an example of the Obama campaign represented in magazine covers, but I would expect little else than a ridiculous strained argument given the fact that you can't pass up attributing everything bad that happens in the world to Hillary.

When you post a thread entitled "Obama's Campaign in Magazine Covers", and then put up a cover that has nothing to do with Obama, except for a stretch in logic, you can expect someone to ask why. Instead of being reasonable, you decided to be an ass. You're still being an ass. Quit being an ass. As always, your threads are about pumping up your own ego at the expense of people you have decided are enemies. You had the chance to explain your point, instead you decided to attack me for no reason other than it makes you feel good. So any opinion - if "opinion" is a word that could be applied to something you post - has no meaning anyway. Go poke your pins in another voodoo doll.

93. Yes, we can agree to disagree. That is good political dialogue
I will agree with you, in part, that the YOU cover was not designed to be, nor is it directly an Obama cover.

However, it clarifies exactly what the Obama campaign is about, and what most if not all other campaigns (not just Senator Clinton's) have been scrambling to duplicate. In one word and one graphic that cover shouts volumes.

I'm a technology professional. One large sector of our work is political. While I have no association with the Obama campaign, I sure wish I did. I would love to take credit for their ground-breaking work. From professional and infrastructure viewpoints, Senator Obama's campaign has been amazing, almost flawless. Technologically they have created the new standard by which all future campaigns will be judged as well as improved upon.

And the generation below 30 years in age saw it instantly and identified strongly with it. Yes, they also identified with the Senator and his message, but it was delivered in "their world."

I am over 60 years old. I "get it" because of the work I do. My same-age friends don't, and think I'm a bit daft. But I live and die with a Blackberry and an iPhone. Most of my same-age friends who have PDA's turn them on once a day, read their mail, and then turn them off. They don't "get it." I'm a bit of an anomaly because I don't live in my own generation, but I'll give odds that the books written about this election cycle will conclude the "YOU" cover concept was a huge factor in this election.

While broadcast TV is still the most effective means of persuasion in large campaigns, media consultants see the decline of TV as an inverse correlation to the rise of the internet and other more interactive media.

I will stick with "YOU" as the best Obama cover. Thanks for the reasoned discussion. This is what DU and its sister sites are supposed to be about.

33. Because unlike Britney, Paris and Lindsey,
Obama is a public servant that inspires and aspires us to a greater good than simply serving ourselves.....which is a rarity amongs politicians.

Unlike the three you mentioned (are you a fan?), he is asking something of us as a nation. And Unlike Hillary, he is running to heal this nation, not running to divide it further....as Hillary has done.

Obama asks graduates for sacrifice, service

In an insistent call to public service and a personal tribute to Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Senator Barack Obama challenged graduates of Wesleyan University yesterday to "work side by side to take on the common challenges that confront all of humanity."

Stepping in for the ailing Kennedy, who was scheduled to deliver the university's commencement address before he was diagnosed with a brain tumor last week, Obama told an audience of several thousand to "be unified in service to a greater good," a cause he described as synonymous with the Kennedy family.

"Surely if one man can achieve so much and make such a difference in the lives of so many people, then each of us can do our part," Obama said of Massachusetts' senior senator. "Surely if his service and his story can forever shape America's story, then our collective service can shape the destiny of this generation. At the very least, his living example calls us to try."

Under cloudless blue skies before a supportive crowd that punctuated his words with warm applause, Obama recalled his own decision as a college graduate to work for a small group of churches as a neighborhood organizer in Chicago for "$12,000 a year plus $2,000 for an old, beat-up car," and how the experience gave him purpose and direction. Students, Obama said, owe it to themselves and those less fortunate to serve the common good.

Of course there are a lot of magazine covers with his face on them. DUH.

It has nothing to do with Britney or whatever other media whore you drag out to try to smear the Democratic nominee.

Obama is now leading a movement of a scale which has not gone unnoticed to the media of the nation and the world, despite your bitterness. If you would back away from the mind-altering power of the sour grapes for a moment, you might just see an inspiring leader and a man that is about to make history for our party. Of course he will be on magazine covers. Go shit on a different thread.
