Kerry Should Just Say He Didn't Vote For Incompetence
I've been saying this for a long, long time. It is a short, easy to digest message for general consumption. Stop making the debate about "strength." Make the terms of debate about competence.

It is a powerful slam to call someone incompetent - imagine someone calling you incompetent - but it is one that people will get immediately. When you say "strength," that can play to Bush's simplicity and arrogance as "moral clarity."

But if you talk about competence, that plays into the fact that Bush is a friggin' idiot without calling him such openly.

If Bush and Cheney want to take the game to Kerry's war vote, I say bring it on suckers. But you can't be parsing between "giving authority" and "voting to invade." It just makes you look quibbling.

Here is your sound bit: "I voted to hold Saddam accountable, I didn't vote for incompetence." You're goddamned right that CNN would pick that up and play it over and over.

And then you get all the folks at the DNC on the same page: John Kerry is competent. George Bush is incompetent. John Kerry is competent. George Bush is incompetent. John Kerry is competent. George Bush is incompetent. John Kerry is competent. George Bush is incompetent. John Kerry is competent. George Bush is incompetent.

Did I mention that John Kerry is competent and George Bush is incompetent?

Here's Kerry saying, "Look at this friggin' idiot running things."

1. Actually, he has. On multiple occasions.
The most direct being his comment in the Rolling Stone interview - "did I think he'd fuck it up this badly?"

2. Ok, That Would Be Much More Effective
Could you see a picture of Kerry on the cover of Time with that quote?

I'm picturing it right now...with a big grin on my face.

4. Agreed. And the picture in your post would be the perfect picture for it.

Too funny.

Edit: Time could do a split cover with the Kerry picture in your post and one of Bush's where he's wearing one of his trademark dumb looks.

3. yep, that'd do it
That's exactly what he needs to say. Even, "I didn't vote for incompetence and I sure didn't vote for war as a first choice". Hope somebody's looking!!
