I was at the breakfast and later press event that Ann Richards addressed in Portland, ME, yesterday. What an amazing woman! She was brilliant. Stuck it to the Bushies and did it in a very entertaining way. She told one story about the "father of our country" being from Texas. Yep, the young George Washington chopped down a mesquite (sp?) tree. It was only shade for 25 miles around and his father, and the neighbors, were very upset. George's Dad asked him if he had chopped down the tree and little George replied, yes, with his little hatchet, he had chopped down the mesquite tree. His father was very upset with him and told him that they would have to move to Virginia. George was very surprised that they'd have to leave Texas just because he had chopped down a tree. His father said that it wasn't because of cutting down the tree; if George wasn't able to lie there was no way they could live in Texas.
She talked about how important women are to this election. She encouraged everyone to speak to the women they meet - making change at the grocery store, driving a taxi, handing back your dry cleaning at the laundry, wherever - and to tell them that the only way things can change is if they vote. Urge them to register and then to get out to vote. Once we get women to vote, Democrats will win.
Outside the hotel there were 5 Bush/Cheney protestors. They appeared very orderly. The funny thing was that this event with Governor Richards was a Women for Kerry thing...all but one of the protestors across the street were men. :)
As I was leaving the parking garage, the attendant noticed the Kerry signs on my back seat and asked if he could have one. I gladly turned one over to him. Another Kerry voter, I hope.
