Our female nominee for the president is eight years younger than I am.

It is very hard to see her take some of the same "lumps" delivered to me in person and by mail and telephone.

But her role was reported in the media AT THE TIME. The Republicans were trying to attach an amendment about gays in the military to the bill, which threatened to derail it. Hillary lobied to keep the issues separate. Not that this was something she was talking about that much anyway. She wasn't even too focused on her record as First Lady (other then her world travels). Obama is the one who worked hard to present her as Bill Clinton's wife running for Bill Clinton's third term--he is a misogynist.

Hillary is not a habitual liar, that was carefully orchestrated campaign by Barack Obama to smear her. And sadly it had some success. But not enough for him to win Pennsylvania or Indiana. We'll see about Montana. And in the end it will wear off just like the nonsense about Al Gore lying about James Lee Witt. Hillary will be redeemed, elected as Senate Majority and Obama will be an irrelevant junior Senator, who spends the rest of his career working to overcome his McGovernite labeling.

Seriously though, a bigger story supposedly "uncovered" in the First Lady papers is that Hillary never held or attended any meetings on the Family Medical Leave Act, which was the first piece of legislation President Bill Clinton signed, 10 days after entering office. Having just written a piece about the FMLA for the upcoming print issue of the Prospect, I can tell you that anyone familiar with the law should have already realized Hillary's very limited involvement. The non-profit organization the National Partnership for Women and Families originally drafted the bill, which was then championed in the House by former Colorado Congresswoman Pat Schroeder and in the Senate by Chris Dodd and Ted Kennedy. These three were at work trying to pass the FMLA from the late-1980s on, while the Clintons were in Arkansas and running a national campaign.

leave act is as gross an exaggeration, if not outright lie, as any of
the well-covered ones we have learned about recently (Northern Ireland
peace accords, Bosnian landing with Sinbad, etc.)

When Hillary
Clinton became First Lady on January 20,1993 the FMLA didn't need any
help to pass, which is the reason it sailed through congress 16 days
later by huge margins.

The bill had been around for years, had
strong support in both houses of Congress, and had already passed, yet
been vetoed, twice before during the preceding George Bush Sr.
Presidency. All it needed was a president who wouldn't veto it. Everyone knew this.

As
soon as that happed congress acted quickly and passed it for a third
time just 16 days into the Clinton Presidency by overwhelming margins.
All Bill Clinton had to do was take out a pen, fulfill his campaign
promise, and sign on the dotted line - which he did. Unless Hillary
helped him hold the pen it's hard to fathom how her campaign can
possibly claim she helped pass the thing.
