Senate 2004 - Should Kerry put Repugs in his Cabinet?
Edited on Mon Aug-09-04 12:31 PM by shawn703
From what I'm seeing, it looks like the Senate should end up with Democrats in the majority again, 50-49-1. (Although Missouri could break for the Democrats now, giving them one more seat.)

Democrats should gain the open seats in Illinois, Oklahoma and Colorado, and Knowles should beat Murkowski in Alaska.

Republicans look like they'll get Senate seats vacated by Hollings in S.C. and Miller in Georgia.

Anyone think Kerry should grab some Republican Senators for his Cabinet, especially those who come from states with Democratic governors? It would be nice to have less opposition when he nominates some judges.

Absolutely not. We are watered down enough as it is.

4. Sure
There are some very competent Republican senators who'd be good. The Senate numbers advantage would be an extra benefit.

5. Possibly
Kerry has already floated McCain or Warner as possibilities for Sec of Defense. Given that the Arizona Gov is a Democrat, would she appoint McCain's replacement to serve out the term? Or, would they hold a special election?

15. Yes - those are about the only two that would be acceptable.
McCaine is too much of a whore - although it might be fun to see the Repubs get po'd by McCain gettting in there...

7. Yes
If they are qualified.

That has always my argument as to what would help bring this country together. Just not any of the incompetent retreads we have now.

I think there are lots of decent 'pubs that would fill positions nicely.

8. Yes
Kerry should and probably will appoint some
qualified Republicans to his cabinet.
Most presidents do that.

Trying to raid GOP Senate seats for partisan gain
will backfire. No Repub. with a brain will go for it.
Kerry will need to work with a divided Senate.
Polarizing it won't help him.

10. Kerry should be no more partisan than GWB has been and certainly not
much less: A take-no-prisoners mentality is a must if humanity is to be ridded of neoconism.

14. NO! NO! NO! NO!
and NO! Keep them away from our government! I certainly am not voting for Kerry for him to turn around and appoint some repubs to his cabinet. How many Democrats are in the chimp's administration?

17. I think he will
because he will make a big effort to try & unite the country & be a Prez to everyone.

He will get nothing done if the atmosphere does not change.

There are Repubs & Dems who always try to work together: Biden, Hagel, etc. & I think Kerry will try to bring those type of people together.

with appointing Republicans to the cabinet. Chaffee, Snow, McCain could all be decent choices.

19. Why not?
As long as they were in line with what President Kerry's (gawd, doesn't that sound nice!) agenda for their particular post, I think it would go a long way in showing the country that President Kerry (ahhhh) really can work accross the aisle.

And as an extra bonus, we could watch InsHannity, Rush, et.al., implode as they chew up thier own as being traitors. Will not go over good in the home districts of the appointees.

The last thing we need is an administration that doesn't give feedback to alternate points of view... look where it's gotten us the past four years. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins from Maine are fairly centered, Lincoln Chaffee too. McCain, I dunno... In some ways it sounds good, but he's too much of an opportunist for his own good. I don't think I would trust him.

22. yup!....
the gopers will probably be having a major make-over after this election. The far right wing extremists are in control right now and the middle of the road republicans are none too happy about it.

23. I Don't Think Bill Cohen was a Problem in the Clinton Administration
If Kerry chooses wisely, no reason it couldn't be a plus.

I think Kerry would be smart to try to create a bipartisan coalition of right-thinking people of both parties against the neocons. Even if it's only 10% of registered Republicans, that could result in a long-term Democratic majority.
