Tommy Franks Says Kerry Is Qualified To Be Commander-in-Chief
WASHINGTON - Retired Gen. Tommy Franks, producer of the early military successes in Afghanistan and Iraq, said Sunday that criticism of John Kerry's war record is political hyperbole and Kerry is "absolutely" qualified to be commander in chief.

A year into retirement, Franks also said he has not decided whether to endorse President Bush for re-election. "I don't know yet. I'm leaning in that direction," he said on ABC's "This Week."

"I really work hard to stay away from hyperbole," Franks said. "People ask me all the time about `Fahrenheit 9/11' and then others will ask me about some equally vitriolic view at the end of the continuum on the conservative side."

"I believe that life really is someplace between the two," Franks said, "and so I am not a fan of hyperbole, whether it is for or against Senator Kerry or George W. Bush."

1. Franks: "Suspend the Constitution! Vote for Kerry!"
Do we really want this goon on our side?

2. Let's Just Pray That We're On His Side
Just kidding. Obviously, this semi-endorsement is meant to impress people who don't hang out and debate policy differences among the Democrats. He is a name the public recognizes and gives a measure of credibility to. Take it for what it's worth (politically).

4. Seems to me this is good for Kerry
The fact that he's said in black-and-white that Kerry is qualified to be commander-in-chief, and compare his recent high military profile to these sleaze merchants who've changed their story 10 times in the past 35 years--that can only be good.

Also, the fact that he's even considering voting against Bush (and for a Democrat!) having served under his command, is really electrifying. That says something profound.

5. Is Tommy Franks a good guy?
He says in that article that he's fiercely independent and he's proud of it. So he's definitely not a Bush slavedog, but he's probably not a raging liberal. Is he like a McCain, a freethinking conservative?

8. I don't know if he's spoken in public about politics to that extent, but
the important thing is that he was out in front as the leader for Bush's military actions. For him to say he doesn't know if he'll vote for Bush, and that Kerry absolutely is ready to be commander-in-chief, is big for that reason.
