West Virginian voters on who to vote for in the GE...in their own words.

A must watch video. Am I a bad person for thinking that the gene pool in West Virginia has fallen behind? Well, chalk it up as an elitist comment from this latte liberal. Seriously though, I know it isn't pc to criticize someones genetic makeup... but it has been true for years that the "best and brightest" have flocked out of West Virginia to get a better education and better jobs in NC and other places.

President Obama... about the initial resistance to the change he brought. :) Then the documentary will move on to what he did to earn a place on our 10$ bill.

3. OMG. Those "dems" who will vote for McCain are disgusting.
That video made me ill. Those people made me ill. And of course, they're not prejudiced or nothin'.

And to think that some people here will align themselves with those people. I say good riddance to bad rubbish.

Hell, even people in Mississippi, where I'm from originally, have enough sense not to say that stuff on camera.

12. Could that be because Mississippi at least has black people, unlike WV?
These people in WV probably have no contact with blacks, as they live in a very white state, and all they know about blacks is what they see on TV (sports, entertainment and the evening news crime report).

At least in Mississippi, blacks make up 37% of the population.

27. I think that's part of it. But mostly I think Mississippi has been so
visible in issues of race that most racist whites there learned to keep their opinions private. And I'm not saying all whites there are racist, far from it. But I do tend to see it in the more isolated areas of the state.

Edited on Fri May-16-08 02:09 PM by calimary
dirty little secrets and dirty little ideas that everyone, even the Deliverance crowd, knew they shouldn't talk about anymore, but still felt, deep-down. It validated all of that, and all of them, and gave them mainstream credibility as hate radio gained commercial dominance. And it's a shame.

I'm conflicted in one sense. It would be very easy for me to get snarky with these people. There's a part of me that's ITCHING to do so - to make some smart-ass crack about "ooooh, I get it. The closet-racism finally rears its ugly head!") at somebody who either trash talks Obama or promotes mcsame - to stick it in and twist it. Especially those people who still don't hesitate to sneer at me for being anti-war and anti-bush. I would like to pay them back, and kick them in the nuts and make them feel terrible about themselves. Don't know that I'll actually do that. We're supposed to be about healing and bringing more people to us, rather than pissing them off and pushing them away, and it's hard to promote conversions and other assorted political soul-saving. Honey versus vinegar and all that.

BUT IT'S WHAT I WANNA DO, DAMMIT!!!!! Rub it in. With salt, and dirty beach sand.

Revenge is mine, so sayeth the insufferable loud-mouth schmuck republi-CON despiser calimary. I'm basically a low-life shit.

And you look down upon West Virginia?

You seem to to look up to NC. Have you checked out our right-wing senators Dole and Burr? We may even have you beat in the race to the bottom of the Senatorial barrel.

20. WVA lucked out with Byrd, Rockefeller won by name
Byrd used to be in the KKK but has changed alot.

Rockefeller came from NY to WV because it is the most economical way
to get a US Senate Seat.

Georgia is taken over by right wingers, but this happened when their state
switched to paperless Diebold machines.

Google "rob georgia" for the Diebold files that rigged the election.

I'm from WVa originally, and I know that the state is at least 10 years behind the
rest of the country, and young people either join the military or move to another
state.

26. Claiming there is a genetic component to cultural behavior is a very bad path to go down.
I don't want to pseudo-Godwin the thread, but that was the exact same argument that post-Darwin, pre-Hitler racists used to justify discrimination against blacks. They said that only the stupidest and slowest were caught by slavers and shipped over, and that centuries of slavery had favored the strong and brutish over the intelligent and disciplined--and that by now, they were simply born stupider, wilder, and more physically dangerous than white people were. Similar arguments were also used by Nazi (Godwin!) "scientists" to justify mistreatment of Gypsies, Jews, and Slavs; European colonialists to justify mistreatment of, well, the entire globe, and Japanese to justify mistreatment of Chinese.

I don't mean to remotely imply that you are suggesting any sort of discrimination against West Virginians, and I agree that the people in the video are reprehensible and that pandering to them is the absolute wrong position. At the same time, saying that their genetic makeup is inferior? Scientifically backwards, culturally ignorant, and reminiscent of very bad points in history.

I'm sure an edited video from where you hail could come up with one person
that would vote against Hillary because of her race. The video author
was looking for a race issue and found a bad tooth. That shot of a street
named Race St. was supposed to mean something too?

The video only proves that if you look long and hard enough for a negative

Most if not all racism anywhere can be blamed on upbringing and education.
That is what we need to work on and fix. Bigotry and racism are learned at home,
it is not confined to any set of states.

We would be doing the country and the world a great injustice if we chose a candidate on skin color because of the prejudices of our most backward and uneducated citizens. That being said, I have a friend from Martinsburg, WV who is one of the most enlightened, nonprejudiced, liberal, intellectual people I have ever met. I make that joke sometimes... "Something is awry with the gene pool."

But I've noticed that the humor is the tip of the iceberg, as with racism. If they were voting for progressive candidates all would be forgiven and we'd defend them with flamethrowers.

So, it's wrong. It's not OK to hate on the poor, especially with aspersions to their genetic quality.

I don't like classism. I like Southern and rural folks. I'm from that stock. So yeah, it's personal.

Underneath the jokes is genuine contempt. People are underinformed and my experience is they ARE TEACHABLE. That's more than I can say for many of their Yankee counterparts. Abuse is not helpful in the educational process.

44. When they say lack of education they mean it
unfortunately. It is just a true fact that people who don't pay attention like we do go for the scare ads and other things the right propaganda pulls out. I remember last election my older daughter voted for Bush because of the war and nothing I could say would talk her out of it, but she was just working and not online, and not watching the news so she didn't real know the truth.

Now...she is older (29) and watching the news, going online and she voted for Obama.

So what I am saying is the people in WV are like she used to be, not paying close enough attention to know the truth and when people try to talk to them like I did my daughter they just act like they know (when they don't have a clue) and get all huffy about it.

57. You story reminded me of something..
When I was campaigning for Obama here in GA, me and my wingman(only term I know for buddy..lol) knocked on a door and when the lady answered we started to give her our pitch for Obama. Before we could get into it she interrupted to say that she will be voting for Bush again this fall. We were floored. She then went on to say how Bush is doing a great job and needs to stay where he's at. We didn't bother to correct her because it was clear that she was being serious. Amazing.

47. The sky IS falling.... The Democrat will vote for McCain, The repubicon will vote for Obama
The two ladies at the diner, what an interesting turn of events.

"We just don't know anything about him."

Here's a suggestion, do some research. Watch a C-SPAN Obama rally.

There is NO reason to NOT be an informed voter. There is still plenty of time to educate yourselves. Don't let your ignorance get in your way. You don't have to be ignorant, find out who Barack is if you have such concerns.

58. God what crap.
This is my take, if we elect McLame because there as still so many people in this country to afraid and or stupid to see beyond skin color, then we're getting exactly what we as a country deserve.

It's time to turn this page.

59. So, you point out that we should be outraged by the racism shown
by the individuals in the video, but then you use genetic background to explain the opinions of the people in the video?

Someday your post will be used to explain cognitive dissonance in the textbooks.

And, incidentally, your comment does sound extremely fucking elitist.

60. I wasn't making a serious genetic claim...
I was trying to insult the intelligence and look of those racists on the video... (I knew I should of gone with an imbred insult)

63. No, you were not just making a claim about the individuals on the video
You were making an argument about the residents of an entire state. And if it wasn't a serious claim, why make it?

I voted for Obama last Tuesday, and I have been with Obama since the beginning of the race. But the attitudes of some of the people here toward others who aren't "enlightened" enough to vote their way really pisses me off.

By the way, what is an "imbred?" Is it something elitist liberals make when they're not busy listening to NPR's food programs and drinking lattes?

70. I have no problem with them voting for Hillary...
Thus I haven't had any problems with the voters in NY NJ MA CA AZ NV etc....

But there is a case to be made that a large portion of people who voted for Hillary in west virginia did so based on her being white and Obama being black (20% actually admitted race played a factor for them) Who knows how many were less open about it. Then we see interview's showing racism in WV...open in public racism.... Excuse me if I have a problem with that. Excuse me if I want to belittle and insult a state with such a high percentage of racists. (and this is the Dem primary, the percentage is most likely higher on the Rep side)

Ohh.. and I don't listen to NPR food programs...only the news reports.

To be fair there are racists in all states. I guess WV has a higher concentration of racists though.

No wonder that place is locked in such poverty and misery. I really hope President Obama will be able to help those pathetic people.
