Why is Bush Crashing in the polls?
I am lloking for well reasoneed responses her.

Is it that Kerry look credible on defense? and people are looking for enought military backbone to stand up to Bin Laden? If The war on terror is taken away from Bush he may not have much left to run on.

No more calls about my "leaky" (non-existent) basement, or "new" windows, or "new" siding, or anything else. We still get polled, tho. And don't get me wrong -- he wasn't worth it, but I like to be "fair" and I'll give him credit for it. My personal pet theory is that he got put on one of the lists, or his family did, because it certainly displayed his priorities!!! :) Best, Ida

6. I don't know but I would guess
that the last terror alert hurt Bush more than it helped.

The terror alert reminded independents that they still aren't safe in spite of all the money that Bush has spent.

The terror alert made independents and Democrats suspicious about the timing of the alert and that underlined questions people have about Bush's credibility.

I think the Dem convention's emphasis on Kerry's personal bravery helped Kerry and hurt Bush when the terror alert was announced.

Yesterday's economic news should lower Bush even more in the next polls.

I can't wait for Bush to be kicked out of the White HOuse!

we are not safer

this last terralert was first reported to be based on 3yr old info and/or info pre-9/11

then it was reported the info was NEW-IMPROVED

then it was reported that it was really old info

Ridge pointed to an increase in "chatter", now he's 'concerned' because the "chatter" has subsided (Goldilocks syndrome -- too much chatter, not enough chatter -- what's the 'just-right' amount of chatter)

9. Kery is leading Bush in all traits
except national security, but he has come close to catching up with BUsh in that area, He has caught up to Bush on ability to handle the war in Iraq, and totally exceeds Bush in all economic areas, INCLUDING the public considering his ideas about taxation better than Bush's. WHich is a major blow to conservatives, as it means that the majority of the public wants the part of the Bush tax cuts to the rich repealed, as Kerry has promised the middle class even more of a tax cut if they repeal the cuts to the rich. Finally a democrat has convinced the middle class that he will give the Middle Class a tax cut at the expense of the rich. Democrats have been saying that for years, but they have been using terminology that was less than clear to the voter. They used to call it "targetted tax cuts". Even that wasnt simple enough for the general voter, so Kerry literally had to get out the finger puppets to explin it in clear sinmmple English. It means We give the middle class a tax cutt by raising taxes on the rich. Nothing about the basic platform of the Democratic Party has changed from its original liberal and progressive goals. WE have just started owning the language again.

30. Bush is a cut and run president who's afraid of his shadow
My thought is that all this malarky coming out with reference to John Kerry's military record, has hurt Bush's credibility. He pretends to take the high road, but most of us know that he's right down there in the gutter with the "swift-boat" veterans. They are making the Navy look bad. A good friend of mine who retired from the Navy a few years ago, said that Bush is anti-Navy, and it's not setting well with him and many of his buddies. Yes, I really believe most people are pretty savvy, and though it may take a while, they do figure it out. Bush might have shot himself in the foot with this one.

POTUS for four years - he's NOT a regular guy anymore. Even his 2000 supporters have higher expectations of an experienced president than they do of a short-term governor from a weak-governor state like Texas.

I think this change in expectations is going to screw W in the debates, especially up against Kerry's gravitas. Bush's 'good ol' boy' routine isn't going to set well with people tuning in to see a President of the United States.

I also think this is one of the quieter reasons why he's been freefalling in the polls. Bush has never been what one would call 'presidential' at all, but the American people expected him to take on the role. Instead, Rove has hidden him as much as possible and he's got to let him out now. Serves 'em right.

Edit: typo

14. Could it be that F9/11 opened some peoples eyes. Then Kerry's
speech sealed the deal?

All the "No bounce" rhetoric on the shows backfired? The "Terror alerts" that scared NY, NJ, and DC?

Or the fact that no one believes that * is not the one behind all the negative ads attacking Kerry.

There are so many reasons why....

Then we could point to *'s actual record on things. Environment, Economy, Deficits...the list goes on and on.

16. Several reasons
1. The economy isn't as good as he says; as of last week, the statistics bear that out.

2. No one can trust anything the administration says about the war on terror. They have played politics with it with everything from Saddam's weapons to the warnings of terrorist threats. Maybe there is good reason to be afraid of a terrorist attack right now; but can you take Tom Ridge's word for it?

3. People are being turned off by Bush's dirty campaigning and that of his supporters as well. He shouldn't be a fellow traveler with the Orwellian named Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. The remarks Mr. McClellan made about the Swift Boat Vets' ad left many people with the impression that it is alright with the Bushies if some partisan loonies want to distort (to put it mildly) Kerry's service record.

19. Fear of Bush's Religious Zealotry
Americans correctly suspect that Bush has a couple of loose wires. If he gets a second term, it's Armageddon for sure. Most of us don't want the Rapture to occur in our lifetimes; we'll wait to be summoned from our graves.

Say what you will about Kerry, but the guy is at least normal. Bush, on the other hand, is a nut job. People are afraid of him.

and rammed it right into the enemy position, during the Democratic Convention, John Kerry made a speech that in effect rammed his campaign boat right at Bush's spin machine, previously designed to paint Bush as a "War President" and strong leader.

Bush was last seen running into the campaign swing-state woods in a black loincloth. You know what happens next.

21. It's not that complicated
Edited on Sat Aug-07-04 03:39 PM by rocknation
The majority of people now realize that Bush is a dangerous nut, that's all.

Bush never HAD anything to run on. He's every bit the flip-flopping super-rich New England-bred Ivy League-educated elitist he accuses Kerry of being. There is now no getting around the fact his invasion of Afghanistan was ill-prepared and that his invasion of Iraq was fabricated to fulfill his own greedy ends. Even if there was a drop of truth to the Smear-Boaters For Bush nonsense, he is far from qualified to criticize ANYONE'S military record. And don't get me started on his religious fundamentalism.

Bush had done well in the polls because with the help of the mainstream media, he'd convinced the public that questioning--never mind disagreeing with--his regime was tantamount to treason. But three things changed all that: the breaking of Bush's AWOL story; the premiere of Farenheit 9/11; and the success of the Democratic convention (despite getting short shrift on broadcast TV). It's simply become safer to be against Bush. As the Al Franken character Stuart Smalley might say, "Bush is NOT smart enough or good enough. So gosh darn it, I DON'T like him--and that's...OKAYYYYYY!"

47. Because people didn't like him to begin with
... but supported the Office of the President after 9/11. We had been told he 'won' the election, he was our 'leader': disaster struck and we as a country needed to rally behind him for our own sense of security and direction.

The media and the polls were stacked in his favor, to make undecided's feel the need to 'get on the bandwagon' ... thus further propping him up.

He blew that. And continued to blow opportunities to make himself into a leader and someone who showed a semblance of giving a damn about the country.

But now people (and the media money) are realizing that his presidency was built on a mountain of jello and he's sinking fast of his own arrogance and ignorance. The media and the business interests are more fickle than the average voter, and if they sense that something/one is going to be a 'money loser' for them, they will bail in a hot second. This is one of those instances.

In short, he never really was that popular, and now that truth is coming out, IMO.

There is a chart that shows all the polling groups and how they have followed Bush* from the beginning. He has trended down from day one. He got a huge bounce on 9-12 and another smaller one when Saddam was captured but the trend has been a steady delcine right from the beginning. He just isn't very well liked.

Yes, Kerry did a good job, despite the spin and attack machine the GOP has in place. Sadly the Dems have no attack machine in place, so expect Bush to get a bounce around early September. It always happens this way; this year won't be any different.

Bush is unpopular because he's screwed up and got a lot of people needlessly killed. It it'd just been the tax cuts and the economy did okay then he'd be coasting to reelection.

41. Because Americans are basically decent human beings
and they are appalled at the direction that the radical right has taken this country.

Bush wasn't that popular to start with, now more and more of those who did not vote in 2000 are determined to do so in 2004.

Additionally, a lot of people who opposed Bush were afraid to speak up in 2000-2003, but are emboldened to express their disapproval now.

Every Kerry bumpersticker/T-shirt/button is a public statement of disagreement with the administration...and the more we put them on our cars...the more we encourage others to join us.

One young lady was serving me dinner at the restaurant and commented on my Democratic party t-shirt. As we talked, it turned out she is diabetic...she has registered and will vote for Kerry over the Stem-cell research issue...but she had decided she would vote Dem after Bush effectively banned it two years ago.

Bottom line I think is that the right has galvanized the left and woken a sleeping giant...so much so that the last arrow in their arsenal is abolishing the IRS...which won't work because you have to have a job to pay taxes...and more and more don't...and the unemployed vote....

42. Bush is a Divider not a Uniter
A large part of the minority that voted for Bush last time has realized that:

Bush is a Divider, not a Uniter.
Bush is passionately conservative, not compassionate.
Bush is a puppet, not a leader.
Bush is a Shrub, but still a Bush.

Make sure all votes are counted. Do lots of exit polling so that the Repugnant electronic voting machine companies do not steal the election.
Especially do the exit polling in key precincts and states. The tighter the state, the greater should be the scrutiny.
