2. We keep running into
people that voted for Bush last time who are voting for Kerry this time. You rarely run into a Gore voter who is voting for Bush. This happens too often for it to be purely anecdotal.

4. I want to be really careful here, and it's probably just wishful thinking
But I think PA is lost for the GOP this election year.

My wife travels for work out in GOP central PA (State College and environs), and she is astounded by the change. Kerry stickers everywhere, and even firm Bush supporters of last year saying they are voting for Kerry. Rendell won the governorship with ease in 2002, and Specter's right wing wacko primary opponent was vanquished as well, putting a nasty taste in some mouths. The job loss is tremendous among the rural/blue collar working class. The wife tells me that several factories in the area of State College closed down this last year and this year, with no real replacement jobs in sight. If it doesn't pick up for Bush/Cheney after the convention, and stay picked up through early October, you can write off PA as a battleground state. I expect that Bush and Co. will stop campaigning in PA pretty soon, and instead focus their attention on the more realistic Ohio.
