How did they earn their medals, if any?

apparently got a Bronze Star in the same incident in which Kerry earned his, and is claiming that Kerry doesn't deserve his because "there was no enemy fire." He said this into the face of Rassman, the guy Kerry pulled out of the water and who recommended Kerry for a Silver Star (he got a bronze)

So, one really has to wonder just what the deal with Thurlow's Bronze Star is, he?
