Time for a deep breath and a 'gut check'
Edited on Mon Aug-02-04 05:59 PM by Cuban_Liberal
The Gallup poll seems to have some people here all atwitter, so it's time to step away from the keyboard, turn off the television and actually think about 'the real world' in which you live. I'm in a retail business and deal with the public about 10-12 hours a day, 6 days a week, and I do this in a fairly 'red' area of Illinois.

Here's what I see and hear, not only in my store, but in the cafe where I eat, the grocery store we use, the bar we occasionally go have a few in, etc.:

1.) There's a moderately-sized contingent of hardcore, straight-ticket Republicans; Bush is gonna get these folks no matter what.

2.) There is a far larger contingent of Democrats who are as united as I have ever seen them. No way in Hell these folks are not gonna vote for Kerry, nor will they stay home this year.

3.) There is a fair-sized contingent of 'undecideds'/independents; since last Thursday night, almost every single one of these folks I have met, talked to or overheard discussing the race have gone over to Kerry/Edwards; not one of these folks have gone over toward Bush.

Quit listening to the Republican noise machine, y'all; John Kerry closed the deal with America last week.

:D

3. Yes, I'm really Cuban.
My Mom is from Cuba, and only the older Cuban-Americans are 'mostly Republican'; those of us who were born here tend to be much less conservative.

:)

5. We have to collect
He certainly closed the deal, but for the next 3 months, we have to go out there and collect by getting all those people registered and to the polls. No complacency, no false sense that we've got it in the bag. Every vote counts. Every vote. We've won nothing until Nov 2.

7. What I did today for the Kerry Campaign
I got a copy of the roughly 200 June 2004 graduates of our local High School.I then got their addresses. THEN,I went to Town Hall and got the town clerk to give me 200 applications for absentee ballots and some voter reg cards.I also got the latest voter list.
I'm on the Democratic Town Committee and within the next 4-5 days a few of us are going to send out congrats to all 200 grads;those that are not registered or unenrolled(independent),or DEMOCRATIC are going to get an application for absentee ballot to go away to college with. Those registered R only got the the standard congrats sent to all grads.
This has to be done within the next 10-14 days
Pass it on

9. Good idea!!

Would it be cheating if I asked my son, who just graduated, which kids NOT to send a registration to? lol. Also, the absentee ballot is excellent because I know they aren't telling kids that voting has completely changed. I'll suggest this Wednesday at our meeting.

6. Great input. But we should not be over-confident. Something to be said
for the polls. Without them I would think that there would be
a huge post-convention bounce.

I would not be thinking about:

1. How little was covered by the TV Networks and how little may have
been watched by the truly undecided.
2. What was the effect of all the media carrying republican sliming of Kerry during the Democratic convention - something that has never happenned before.
3. Could there be a price to paid for having a convention that barely attacks the opposition party -- something, again, that is a first.

8. I checked my gut
Mr/s. Cuban_Liberal:
I just watched The Idiot Bush on C-span. He is clearly more
calm now that he is medicated. He is STILL determined to link
Iraq to WMD as well as links to Osama. How many times can he
insist that these lies are true? He also said that given what
he knows today he would still go in. Isn't it a sign of
insanity to deny reality?

I checked my gut and it is sick. I am revolted that this
childish frat boy can delude himself into believing reality
actually conforms to his delusions. When he was asked about
Sen. Kerry's position that the Occupation of Iraq had AIDED he
TERRORISTS in fund raising and recruiting, Little george said
"He does not understand the nature of the war on
terrorism". I maintain The Idiot Bush does not understand
anything about Muslim ideology and is to lazy to inform
himself.

I am tired of the Embarrassing activity of the Resident and am
looking forward to RE-Defeating him in Nov.
