I was reading the paper today (an old copy of Times Standard from about 2 1/2 weeks ago) and i read a comment about what Bush said at the annual correspondents dinner, about why Senators Clinton and Obama could not attend. He said "Hillary couldn't get in because of sniper fire and Obama's at church."
That got me thinking about the whole situation, and the rumors surrounding Obama's faith. Some people believe he is a Muslim, for example. Well, it was known from the start that they were going to go after his religion is dirty, slimy, underhanded ways, but they realized, I think, Obama's speaking power and his ability to get people to trust him. One of Obama's campaign strategies to convince religious voters to vote for him is that he is very open about his religion, and I think it has greatly helped his campaign, in political terms. The GOP saw this, and realized the harshest way they could try and take him out wasn't merely spreading rumors, it was making it so that whenever he spoke about religion, people didn't get the same safe feeling that a lot of people get, they visualize a highly negative image. I think what they've done, in what was probably an unnecessarily long-winded point, is that they were trying to destroy one of his greatest strengths, which was that people would often trust him because of his straightforwardness with his religion.
P.S. I'm sure this is nothing new to anybody, but that's ok, I kind of just felt like posting a rambling point about something that I was thinking about.
So for those of you that humored me,
Thanks. :)
