The new Dan Quayle? Obama: "I'll be President of every state. All 57 of them."
"It is wonderful to be back in Oregon," Obama said. "Over the last 15 months, we’ve traveled to every corner of the United States. I’ve now been in 57 states? I think one left to go. Alaska and Hawaii, I was not allowed to go to even though I really wanted to visit, but my staff would not justify it."

The Times' conscientious Robin Abcarian thought she heard something different there. She checked her tape recorder. It had captured what he had actually said -- 57 states now. A new Louisiana Purchase that's gone unannounced so far? http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/05/barack-obama-wa.html

And yet no DU press coverage of McSames Sunni-Shiite, Czechoslovakia, or League of Nations mixups? Gee...now I wonder why wouldn't that be a better topic?

136. Interesting logic. Because he declines to debate you spin that to mean he is afraid.
Is the Bill Oreilly? I believe he would love an honest debate. But we haven't seen one yet. ABC and their Sen Clinton supporters took pot shots at him all night. Never allowing issues to be discussed. I hope he never goes on a network again unless the questioners are neutral.

If you are going to continue to degrade the Democratic nominee, I suggest you find a different blog. Maybe the freepers would welcome you.

He mispoke and said fifty seven instead of forty seven, and then refered to it being all but one, not counting Alaska and Hawaii as he doesn't have time to go that far. Ie the 48 contiguous continental states.

103. He didn't say he would be Prez of all 57 states. he said he had so far visisted 57
with a few states left to go. He meant 47 with a few states left to go. The OP's title was made up to be humorous not what he actually said. I'm a Hillary supporter, but what he said was nothing more than an obvious slip of the tounge. Everybody does it. I couldn't imagine giving that many speeches and not having done it at least once. Check the text of the OP again. :)

of the country so the title was not misleading at all. Sure, it was probably a slip of the tongue. Can't the Clintonites cling onto every little Obama gaff just as the Obamaians have done? I hope it was a slip of the tongue, you never know tho' a lot of people thought Bush was brainy.

50. How many states do YOU think the U.S. has??

There are fifty (50) states and Washington D.C.

The last two states to join the Union were Alaska (49th) and Hawaii (50th). Both joined in 1959.

Washington D.C. is a federal district under the authority of Congress. Local government is run by a mayor and 13 member city council. Washington DC is represented in Congress by an elected, nonvoting Delegate to the House of Representatives and residents have been able to vote in Presidential elections since 1961.

Puerto Rico is a commonwealth associated with the U.S. Its indigenous inhabitants are U.S. citizens. Puerto Ricans are unable to vote in U.S. Presidential elections but they do elect a nonvoting resident commissioner to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Dependent areas: American Samoa, Baker Island, Guam, Howland Island, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, Kingman Reef, Midway Islands, Navassa Island, Northern Mariana Islands, Palmyra Atoll, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Wake Island
note: from 18 July 1947 until 1 October 1994, the US administered the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, but recently entered into a new political relationship with all four political units: the Northern Mariana Islands is a commonwealth in political union with the US (effective 3 November 1986); Palau concluded a Compact of Free Association with the US (effective 1 October 1994); the Federated States of Micronesia signed a Compact of Free Association with the US (effective 3 November 1986); the Republic of the Marshall Islands signed a Compact of Free Association with the US (effective 21 October 1986)

45. Can you tell me how many states ARE in the United States of America? Just Curious.
How many states are there in the U.S.?

After Candy Crowley had introduced the clip by commenting on his showing signs of a lack of sleep.

Which obviously is all it was.

Still, NOT the best thing to have happen after taking a shot at McCain for "losing his bearings."

No one's going to mistake Obama for the new Dan Quayle, obviously.

102. OMG
All the news channels/web sites/papers had a field day with him using the word "bitter" instead of "disheartened/discouraged". The "white people" statement by Clinton is much worse, as far as I'm concerned and it is not getting one-third the buzz. Why? Because Barack is not attacking her over it. John McCain is not attacking her over it. She has gotten so many free passes that it makes sick some times. The same can be said for the ever more red faced Bill.

Don't mean to offend but am sick of the sour grapes forced upon us because of the Clinton's own failures.

Yours is not one of them. To equate an honest gaffe, born of fatigue (or as a nod to those counting territories, maybe that too), and not stupidity.

Dan Quayle was dumber than a bag of rusted hammers. His gaffes were born of a weak mind and congenital ignorance. Whatever reservations I may have about Senator Obama, I would never insult him or his intelligence by equating him to the coup insurance once known as VP Quayle.

If we could anti-recommend a thread, this would get my vote tonight.
