2008 Food Drive is letter carrier blitz against hunger

Learn More » http://www.secondharvest.org/stampouthunger

May 10 is the nation's largest single-day food drive with
our friends at the National Association of Letter Carriers.

Letter carriers, with help from their sisters and brothers in the other postal crafts
and thousands of other volunteers, will stage a blitz on Saturday, May 10, to combat
hunger in America, conducting NALC’s annual “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive in every
U.S. state and jurisdiction.

The drive, in its 16th year, is the largest one-day food collection in the nation
and the biggest community service effort by any union affiliated with the AFL-CIO.

On the day before Mother’s Day this year, letter carriers will focus their efforts on
restocking the community food banks, pantries and shelters that millions of American
families will rely on throughout the summer.

To participate, leave food donations by your mailboxes on Saturday, May 10th.

Your letter carrier will pick them up and bring them to your local food pantry!

Who's Hungry in America?

Did you know that 35 million Americans are hungry or living on the brink of hunger?

See the faces and hear the words of the real people affected by hunger in the U.S.,

and learn how America's Second Harvest food banks are helping.

Harlem Globetrotters

True champions and pioneers of basketball, the Harlem Globetrotters are
committed to giving back to the communities that have supported them.

-----------

Though thousands of local post offices will be participating in the program, some are unable to.

To find out whether your letter carrier is participating, search the USPS website for the contact

information for your local post office.

* Go to the U.S. Postal Service website---> http://www.switchboard.com/usps.1355/dir/6_0/index.htm?mem=1355

You can still bring donations to your local food pantry, if your letter carrier isn't able to do that tomorrow.

1. Our bag is filled up and waiting in the garage.
I truly love our Mail Lady and this is a great thing for the postal service to do.

Even if you are unaware and have not prepared, dig in your pantry and stick a can or two out in the mailbox tomorrow.

THANKS FOR THE REMINDER.

9. Thanks for the reminder! I'd have forgotten...
I know I've been way better about remembering to bring my own bags to shop when I had one hell of a time finding a bag around here -- finally found an OLD plastic bag tucked away in my "pantry." Filled to the brim for tomorrow!

Oregon Letter Carriers Hope to Collect 2 Million Pounds of Food

http://www.salem-news.com/articles/may072008/oregon_food_drive_050608.php

Most wanted foods include: tuna fish, soups, stews, chili, canned fruits, vegetables, beans, rice and pasta.

(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - Close to 3,000 letter carriers throughout Oregon and Clark County, Wash., will join with letter carriers across America to collect donations of nonperishable food from their postal customers during the annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive on Saturday.

Look for a yellow, plastic food drive bag in your mail during the first week of May. Fill the bag with nutritious, nonperishable food and place it by your mailbox early on Saturday. Letter carriers will collect nonperishable food donations left by mailboxes and take them to their local post office. Trucks will pick up the food and deliver it to regional food banks of the Oregon Food Bank Network. All donated food stays in the community where it was collected.

This year's goal is to collect two-million pounds of food during the National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive. Last year's NALC Food Drive raised more than 1.6 million pounds of food throughout Oregon and southwest Washington.

Most wanted foods include: tuna fish, soups, stews, chili, canned fruits, vegetables, beans, rice and pasta.

Do NOT include glass items, homemade items or previously opened containers.

Edited on Sat May-10-08 03:56 PM by libnnc
It was right underneath my mailbox on the front porch (she left mail too).

I must have just missed her.

I know that not all carriers are participating but I assumed that mine was since I got a bag and reminder card in my mail yesterday.

Can't get anyone on the phone now at the local post office.....guess I'll have to take it myself to the food bank on Monday when they're open.
