From a couple of letters to today's NY Times:
"In 'Edwards Gives Strong Tribute as Democrats Nominate Kerry' (front page, July 29), Senator John Edwards says to Al Qaeda: 'You cannot run. You cannot hide. We will destroy you.' Al Qaeda, as a matter of fact, can run and hide - it happens to be one of its greatest strengths. The next administration's challenge is to find it. Mr. Edwards gives no indication of how this will be done. I, as an undecided voter, need to hear the Democrats' plan for fighting this war against Islamist terror. Since 9/11, America has gone from defense to offense with regard to this war, and many swing voters believe that this is the only way to win."
- Yeah, if by "gone from defense to offense" he means, hunting for Al Qaeda where it doesn't happen to be instead of where it is! What has George W. Bush done since late 2002 to find Osama Bin Laden? (Other than order the Pakistanis to please try to announce his capture during the week of the DNC?)
"We took out a proven mass murderer because the whole world thought he still had weapons of mass destruction. If that is a cause for hatred of the United States, then those who hate this administration are not only wrong, but on the wrong side of history."
- Except - the whole world did not think he still had WMD - Colin Powell said as much in early 2001. The inspectors were not finding anything. The Bush Administration had an absolute responsibility not to go to war just because they "thought" he had WMD - they had a moral obligation to prove it, and not just because it's a sin to sacrifice your soldiers' lives if you aren't 100% sure. Invading Iraq without sufficient justification or force and without any kind of a realistic plan for the aftermath took necessary forces out of Afghanistan (which is reverting to its pre-invasion miasma) and made Iraq a recruiting ground and poster for the very terrorists we're supposed to be fighting!
As long as people insist on deluding themselves (with the help of too much of the lazy, gelded press) that the Bush administration has actually taken effective steps against terrorism, Kerry is in for a very long uphill climb. He and Edwards have to come out swinging on this, even more than they have so far. In short, simple sentences that no one can misconstrue that have to tell the American public the truth - George W. Bush has squandered 3 years and countless resources in a futile mismanagement of the struggle to defeat terrorism and make the world safe. If they can do that, they'll win.
