* The Green Light: Attorney Philippe Sands Follows the Bush Administration Torture Trail (4/3/2008)

AMY GOODMAN: The House Judiciary Committee is preparing to hold a series of hearings examining the Bush administration’s role in authorizing the illegal torture of prisoners in US custody at Guantanamo and elsewhere. On Tuesday, Judiciary Committee Chair John Conyers subpoenaed Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief of staff, David Addington, to testify at a hearing scheduled for June 26th.

Three other former Bush administration officials have already agreed to testify: former Attorney General John Ashcroft, former Justice Department attorney John Yoo and former Pentagon official Douglas Feith. Over the past month, more evidence has emerged tying high-ranking Bush administration officials to the use of torture.

In April, ABC News reported Vice President Cheney, former National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Secretary of State Colin Powell, CIA Director George Tenet and Attorney General John Ashcroft all discussed and approved how top al-Qaeda suspects would be interrogated by the CIA.

President Bush has also confirmed he was aware of these meetings. In an interview with ABC News, Bush said, “We started to connect the dots, in order to protect the American people. And yes, I’m aware our national security team met on this issue. And I approved.”

Today, we’re joined by British attorney and author, Philippe Sands. He is the author of the new book Torture Team: Rumsfeld’s Memo and the Betrayal of American Values. On Tuesday, Philippe Sands testified before the House Judiciary Sub-Committee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties.

3. Is someone actually suggesting that?
Powell lost any respect I might have had for him when he KNOWINGLY lied to the UN for the serial murderers in the white house. The blood has stained his hands just as deeply as the others.

5. yes, somebody posted the other day that obama/powell would be a "dream ticket"
thank goodness I wasn't drinking anything when I saw that

that man has had no credibility with me since my lai. he has been a suck-up to the powerful since the day he put on a uniform.

and the fact that he still refuses to take responsibility for helping to lie us into the war is yet another reason to loathe him. he is "sorry" that he was duped, trying to have us believe that he did not have access to information that everyone on DU had, and as if his "regret" could undo the hundreds of thousands of lives lost and wounded, along with the destruction of a society.

may he receive everything he deserves

6. Whoever posted that is a moron.
And it's not something I've heard from any other person, no matter who they support.

12. Stick around long enough & you'll hear the craziest ideas -usually espoused by lone nutjobs though
Hell, there are even a couple of barking mad loonies who think Hillary Clinton is going to be President.

4. On top of all that, he just turned 70.
If we're going to go with a guy who'll practically speaking be too old to run for president in 8 years, I'd rather see Wes Clark.

8. Sadly, he can't be trusted
He knew what was going on and chose silence. Coming clean after thousands have already died for lies does NOT redeem one sufficiently to be trusted again. We can forgive, but we should never forget.

10. Powell has been a gutless ass-kisser hie entire career.
He belongs in a jail cell for his knowing participation in waging the illegal, agressive, war for profits in Iraq.

11. Two black men on a ticket in these United States
The Democratic party has not been able to handle (by handle I mean accept it without race, racism, racial undertones creeping into the process) one half African American running for president for 15 months. How do we expect the country to accept both men on one ticket?

I have a hard time believing that Colin Powell would turn a blind eye to the administration's tactics and willingly sign off on it. I need to see the memos myself before I believe this one. I know he gave that roundly discredited evidence about Saddam Hussein, but I need understand this waterboarding discussion.

Criteria

My thoughts were if Obama reached across the political aisle and picked a Republican he would go for Chuck Hagel- Neb. He has been FORCEFULLY against the Iraq war and has not endorsed John McCain.

If BHO is going to go for retiring the pain of the last few decades and resolve problems, he can take Doris Kern Goodwin's advice to have a diverse (as in political opinion) cabinet or ticket to work through the wrinkles in issues in house before they start taking on the tough issues of our day. Maybe he should be looking for different types of political thought within today's right leaning media or within progressive political nightmares like Nader as long as they understand he is the man within the administration.

There are far too many cabinet and sub-cabinet level choices to look to the DLC for the Republican view. My hope is with the enemy held within, we can get rid of these fake political arguments and dig deep to make sure the baby boom elderly folks will have a Social Security plan for their lengthened life times, all Americans have access to universal health care, and we begin to embrace American national service (along the lines of community or military service) in high school graduates. I'd love to see Dennis Kunninch work through this Office of Peace idea too.

14. That ain't the problem.
The problem is that Powel is a discredited war criminal neocon fucknut. I could not care less what shade of skin color he sports.

13. Anyone here who honestly thinks that needs to think again.
I recall about one post suggesting that, and it was almost unanimously shouted down.
