Saw Hillary Appearance in Sioux Falls, South Dakota online
Sioux Falls Argus Leader hosted live feed of Hillary's appearance in South Dakota.

The first staffer who tried to keep the crowd occupied when Hillary ran almost an hour late seemed to be in tears. She was asking for people to sign up for absentee ballots and nobody was signing up. Then she lead the a cheer with "Madam" and asked the crowd to reply "President." Her voice was breaking and waivering more with each "Madam" she tried to yell.

Then when Hillary was introduced by a member of the Rapid City city council (a black man from the other side of the state 400 miles away) the tone was subdued at best. Almost low key, very resigned.

It was interesting that the event was in a small hanger on the edge of the run way. Drop in, drop out. The crowd was estimated at a couple of hundred in a city of 125,000 people. One commentator noted how few men there were in the crowd.

1. Awwwwwwww.
It's hard when you work you ass off for a campaign and you pour your heart and soul into it to have to face an unsuccessful end to that campaign. Been there, done that -- it sucks.

13. Yep....WAY more than 200. Place was packed (at least in the video)...
And huge cheers for her. A little delusional on the part of a couple of people who commented ("she's going to be president so Obama needs to stop") but definitely different than represented in the OP.

2. I spent a good part of my childhood living in small towns within the state of South Dakota.
My brother lives in Sioux Falls and is supporting Obama and I have numerous cousins living on "the great plains" small towns within the state.

Just my IMPRESSION - but SD have a very low tolerance for B.S. When you have to get up at O'dark thirty to milk the cows or clean stalls at your Uncle's Sale's Barn, you don't want to be cajoled ... just talk FACTS.

I don't know what my cousins will do in latte bastions like Gregory or Winner but my brother is voting for Obama. I can be pretty sure of knowing him now since I visited him during Pheasant Season last year ... he didn't attend HRC's soiree pictured above.

4. Kind of sad
It's got to be demoralizing at this point...I know how demoralized I felt a week ago when things seemed to be falling apart for Obama, and he still had options because he had more delegates. It gets tough at the end to stay motivated and keep volunteering and giving money or even going out to rallies when you know it's probably over. I supported Dean in 2004, but after the first few primaries I saw the writing on the wall and it was hard to stay motivated to keep being involved with the campaign. I think part of why I am feeling sad reading stories like this is because I remember 4 years ago...it gets depressing at the end, and I really do feel bad for Clinton and her supporters and especially her staff, who have worked tirelessly for over a year and must find it tough to keep going.

6. I also grew up in South Dakota
People are very down to earth with a low tolerance for fakes. There is a strong progressive tradition in the Upper Midwest that has never been wiped out, even through the Reagan to Bush years. --Wanet

12. "There is a strong progressive tradition in the Upper Midwest"
Exactly. I sense that mostly in the Sioux Falls and Rapid City areas. :hi:

11. I have to share this ...
The following is the racial diversity (percentages of ethnicity) within the small town where we lived the longest (6 years):

· German - 41%
· English - 10%

· Irish - 8%
· Norwegian - 5%
· Dutch - 5%
· Swedish - 5%
· Czech - 5%
· American Indian tribes, specified - 2%
· Sioux - 2%
· French (except Basque) - 2%
· Russian - 2%
· Danish - 2%
· Scottish - 1%
· Scotch-Irish - 1%
· Swiss - 1%
· Welsh - 1%
· Czechoslovakian - 1%
· Belgian - 1%

*BTW the truly disenfranchized population was (and IS) The Sioux Indian, i.e., racism is everywhere. :(
