MSNBC MUST have made mistake: reported 10 min ago that AFL-CIO will be HELPING McCain
Edited on Fri May-09-08 10:02 AM by WA98296
By sending out more than 6,000 of it's people to 22 states to talk to people about McCain!

Organized labor?
Have they lost their minds?

UPDATE: I am hoping that the reporter made a mistake... but clearly they said the AFL-CIO was HELPING McCain

I just replayed it a 4th time from tivo:

At 34 minutes after the hour:

"John McCain is getting more help from organized labor, the AFL-CIO announcing it will send more than 6,000 of it's people to more than 22 states over the next two weekends to talk about Senator McCain."

25. The AFL-CIO has not endorsed Hillary, and they are not pro-McCain
Many of the AFL-CIO member unions have endorsed Hillary, and some have endorsed Obama (he just picked up AFGE this morning). The AFL-CIO as an organization has not endorsed a presidential candidate, but they have issued an anti-endorsement of McCain. Absent a nominee, the AFL-CIO is working to define McCain as anti-worker and Bush's third term. It sounds like the way MSNBC reported it was misleading.

8. There are cases where the LEADERSHIP of a union is as bad as the corporate
leadership. I agree, they are definitley not in touch with their membership, and are working against the interests of the blue- and white-collar workers.

18. The leadership of the AFL-CIO is anti-McCain
The AFL-CIO has not endorsed a candidate, but they have issued essentially an anti-endorsement, endorsing the defeat of John McCain. They are working to convince their members that McCain is bad news for working families. Check this out: http://www.aflcio.org/issues/politics/mccain.cfm

23. They CLAIM they are not endorsing anyone yet..
What Is Working Families Vote 2008?

WORKING FAMILIES VOTE 2008 is the online center for union members and all working women and men to get involved in selecting America's next president. This site's goal is to provide a comprehensive voter guide that fosters civic participation among working people and encourages them to register and vote by informing and engaging them on key working family issues and the presidential candidates' records and positions on the issues. The AFL-CIO has not endorsed any candidate, and as a matter of policy, the AFL-CIO will not do so unless and until its affiliated unions reach a sufficient consensus on a particular candidate. Meanwhile, this website provides and links to information about all viable declared and exploratory presidential candidates seeking the nomination of either major political party

29. They haven't endorsed anyone yet
A lot of their member unions have endorsed Hillary, and a few have endorsed Obama (he just picked up AFGE today). But the AFL-CIO as an organization does not endorse until 2/3 of the member unions (in proportion to the number of members each union has) have endorsed.

on Bill Press yesterday and as I understood it, they were sending out people to talk about McCain and tell people what a shit he is. NOT TO HELP HIM, but to make sure that voters know what a right wing nutbag he is.

on edit: it could have been someone from another huge union, but I am sure this was it.

ANTI-McCAIN! Not pro-McCain
AFL-CIO extends anti-McCain campaign

The nation's largest labor federation announced today that it will go door-to-door in battleground states over the next two weekends to tell union voters about its concerns with Republican John McCain's economic and healthcare proposals.

The AFL-CIO said it hopes to reach 200,000 swing voters with 6,200 volunteers as part of its "McCain Revealed" campaign. The canvassers are scheduled to be in Colorado and Michigan this coming weekend, and in Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington state, the weekend of May 17.
The labor federation could be a crucial ally for the Democratic nominee in November against McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee.

"Sen. McCain's economic path would lead to disaster for America's working families," AFL-CIO President John Sweeney said in a statement. "He wants to tax health care benefits and supports unfair trade policies that send family-supporting jobs overseas. It's time for McCain to tune out the corporate and insurance industry lobbyists who hold sway in his campaign and start listening to the real concerns of working people."

12. To talk about why McCain is bad for working families
In the absense of a nominee (yet), the AFL-CIO has been working to define McCain for their members, to show them that he's not really a moderate when it comes to issues important to them. They are trying to convince their members why McCain is bad for them. They have been protesting at McCain events since March.

Even though you used the sarcasm thingy I think that was uncalled for, no one said anything of the sort. Why bring race into yet another thread where race isn't even mentioned. I bet you are one of the ones calling for folks to back off Hillary and her supporters yet you come in this thread with this shit. Sarcasm or not I think that was uncalled for in a thread where race wasn't even fucking mentioned.

37. One needn't look too far for threads explaining how much better off since our integrity is undiluted
by "racist" "white trash" "ignorant" "uneducated" working class folks.

We only seem to have any concern about our systematic and deliberate party purge when it appears that democrats are leaving en masse.

Democrats becoming Republicans is a bad thing. Sometimes I feel that I'm the only one here who really believes that.

Yeah, they'll be sending people out to talk about McCain -- to INFORM them about how bad he is.

Go to the AFL-CIO website. Here's what you'll find on McCain in just a couple of clicks:

There is no way in hell the AFL-CIO will support McCain.

Since March, while Clinton and Obama have been duking it out, the AFL-CIO has been busy trying to define McCain for its members and the general public, working to shed the myth that he is a maverick and demonstrate why he is bad news for working families. They have been protesting outside of his events for months.
