Obama Oregon trip - may include Bend, Oregon too:)
Just ran across this in our local tv news - Obama may spend two days in Oregon, and there are very tentative plans for a visit to Bend, Oregon, for anyone who wants to keep an eye out for it. Lots of rumors flying here.

I live most of the year just outside of Bend, and this would be very cool for him to show up here in our high desert on this Oregon visit, even more so if our state does GOBAMA and gives him the remaining delegates he needs to become our nominee officially.

2. I hope for you that he comes
I know an author from Bend, Ellen Waterston, who has written quite a bit about local matters, including the closing of the sawmills. It will be interesting to see if Obama comes and how he addresses the economic plight of the area.

3. Having made several fine trips on the Deschutes River and
hiked in the Sisters mountains, all I can say is Sen. Obama has picked a beautiful part of the country to campaign! GOBAMA!

Come on Oregon, help put it away!

9. :)
Hiking is a blast here - I just started doing this since I came here, and there is not much as wonderful and head clearing as a long hike to anywhere. I haven't done the Sisters yet, it is to be this summer.

We live next to BLM/SF land, and I hike every day that there is no rain (which is most days). I just adopted a shelter dog who turns out to be able to completely out-hike my sorry old bones.

So every day at 6am we do a few miles out the back door in the great beyond. Same in the evening, so I should be ready for big stuff by the time true warm weather arrives:)

13. I have a terrific shot of my husband and dog we had in 1982
on top of Mt. Bachelor!! Dogs are great hiking buddies :-). It's really nice to be next to the BLM/SF land and good for you that you get out there.

Sometimes I miss the West, but we are 1 mile from a state park here and surrounded by state game lands (and a good canoeable river) too.

:toast: and a belated welcome to DU!

16. Dogs rock
and Bend is a very dog friendly city:) Old age/disease claimed my once in a lifetime dog companion a few months ago; due to her infirmities during her last year, I didn't get out as much as we had in the prior years. We'd done hiking and horse shows together on the west coast from California all the way up through Canada - happy days pass too quickly some times.

What state are you in now? And thanks for the welcome - isn't this just about the most exciting election season you ever seen? !!

17. Dogs are the best
Sorry about your old friend . We had a lab/shepherd mix that passed away in 2003 - he was one month from his 16th birthday and was still hiking with us until three weeks before he died....

We are in PA (both of us are from the Pgh. area and retired back here after decades of chasing jobs all over the US). Pgh. is a two hour drive southwest of us - close enough to go see our elderly Mom's.

The only election I can compare this to is McGovern in 1972 - I was 19 and working hard on campus for him....I've been on DU since March 2004. It has preserved my sanity from living in a red area of San Diego County back then :-).

19. sorry about your friend too...
that is so good that he was hiking up till he passed. My girl almost made 13, and while she couldn't do the really heavy stuff anymore, she was pretty darned active at a slightly lesser level, & wiggling like a pup and grinning every time I left the house, even if I was only gone 5 minutes, until that last bad week, so her passing here at home was a bit of a shock. Her GSP brother is still going strong, and even keeps up with the new rescue kid (a pointer with a motor) - at least for one of the daily walks:)

Portland was our "home base" and our biz took us here, there, everywhere for years - a bit of all work, not enough play, but we are catching up in our "retired" place here. We are enough outside of the Bend area that while the solitude maintains my balance, it isn't possible to discuss politics or religion locally - the net keeps me in touch with where I need to be on those subjects too.

Here's to a great spring/summer for both of us on opposite coasts, hiking and keeping in touch with the stuff that makes life special! Take care.

7. :)
I am certain we could show this young man a great time here. If he does come, this would be the first time in my 50 years that I would love to go see a political candidate in person. It would be an honor to be able to actually hear from a young man who conducts himself in the public political process as well as Obama does. Win, lose or draw, it would be something special - but the sense is that he will win big here.

He had absolutely g'normous crowds of supporters show up when he came to Portland and had Bill Richardson endorse him. It was on a level I haven't ever seen in Oregon (I am a life long Oregonian, transplanted some years back to Central Oregon from Portland - still have a place over there, but can't bring myself to leave all the things mentioned that spring from here - good beer, great rivers, desert life, quiet, peace, and yes, serious issues that we have to work out to make Central Oregon viable during the coming bad times).

15. Thanks for posting that!
Had a ktvz article on this last nite, but dial-up made it impossible for me to post it. Here is another article from this morning on his visit -

http://www.bendbulletin.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080509/NEWS0107/805090495/1041&nav_category=

The bad news for me is that you need a ticket and they are only available from noon to 9pm today. Bend is a 2.5 hour round trip for me. I have appointments here on site all day, so there is no way I can do that kind of turn around. I imagine the ticket requirement and short notice is about a busy schedule for Obama and probably security; when I was young, I would have jumped on this short notice with no problems. Guess I am firmly in the somewhat slower older voter camp now:)

I hope this thing is packed and goes well - if anyone goes to it tomorrow, please post any info on the experience.
