Are these people paid by moveon, mediamatters, or project chaos?
Edited on Wed May-07-08 04:53 PM by TheDudeAbides
I'm new here, and have been following the constant pattern of
threads for a couple of weeks: post bait, pile on, bury...Again Again!
I call them Teletubbies due to the "Again again" nature of the method.

At first I thought they were kids who support Obama. But then I concluded
that they must be paid because a normal person (even a kid) would get bored doing this after
a couple weeks and quit.

So, then I theorized that they are paid by somebody to do this.
Is it an organization supporting Obama? Maybe. But their behavior seems to
disrupt and turn people off more than build bridges for Obama.

So, now I'm wondering if they are part of Project Chaos.

What do you DU old-timers think? Who are these people and why are they here?
Are they known quantities to you guys?

Or is this just what you guys do here at DU? If so, that's cool; I'll play for a while and
then "moveon" myself.

Thanks for your thoughtful posts.

1. post bait, pile on, bury...Again Again!
That's been the M.O. of Clinton supporters since early last year.

2. some of them are from the left
...and their objective is to split the Democratic Party. Looking at DU with that in mind explains some of what goes on here.

4. Yea, like the candidate who slammed MoveOn...
And sided with McCain over Obama.
And huddled with Scaifie and Murdoch.
The one that Limbaugh supports...

Must be a leftist trying to divide the party.

I do like your 'Project Chaos' theory, tho. There is a defininate 'disruptor' taste to it.

8. Funny how the near-daily posters who last for a few hours and get tombstoned aren't plugging Obama.
There's been a few, but the majority of them seem to be arguing against him. The OP strikes me as flamebait, much in line with what it claims to be complaining about.

14. True... True...
I guess they could be sorted out into several groups...

-Those who post about their candidate and their candidate's stand on an acknowledged issue. (rare)
-Those who have been alarmed by exposure to some vile Corporate Media reactionary BS issue. (Far too common)
-Those who ...

But, there are certainly those who are here to cause chaos. But, it's not all that much fun and after a few
cycles... Unless there is some external motivation. Why do they keep doing it?

10. The Ignore Button Never Hurts, Most of The Hardcore DU People Are Wonderful
Even the nicest of us admits that it has been a grueling experience and sometimes our emotions get the better of us. But I came to DU in 2003 or so because it offered a chance for knowledgeable people to debate/commiserate on the issues facing us. This has been a primary season for the history books, something they'll be talking about in 50 years, the way they do about, say, the Nixon-Kennedy debates.

Hang in there. We're good folk. Try to avoid conspiracy theories. They'll just burn you out. My guess is that there are a bunch of intense people who misdirect their personal issues out into the relative anonymity of the internet, using Clinton and Obama as characters in their own story. Then again, who among us doesn't identify and project a little bit onto politics ourselves? I try to stay focused on policy matters, but I can't say that I don't feel that Obama represents the closest a national-level figure has ever come to resembling myself and my own ways of thinking.

They're probably dying to devote their time to GTA4, right about now, that's why they really want it over with.

16. I think you are correct.
I see Obama supporters here with 1000 plus posts whom I have never seen on this board. And I check in at least once a day. I am pretty sure that I recognize a handful of them from Kerry's run. They haven't posted since then.

But it seems like they choose one theme and harp on it for a week or so in post after post. They might choose a buzzword like "elite" or "cult" or "sniper fire" or "kitchen sink." They then talk to each other in thread after thread and try to beat it to death or mock it. It isn't working. Or, they might choose a theme, like "the math" or "Clinton should drop out now," and repeat it ad nauseam. No one but Obama supporters is impressed by that either.

Sometimes propaganda works. Repetition, and bandwagon thinking can be very effective. Ridicule can be effective, too. But I think most DUers are a bit more politically savvy and a bit smarter than average. We will weigh all sides before deciding.

Of course some of them are freepers and trolls, too. They hate all things Clinton, so it is easy for them to pretend to support Obama.

Some of them are genuine Obama supporters and committed Democrats who are getting carried away. I would probably like them in real life, and be very willing to work with them if Obama is the nominee.

17. There's a saying about debate
'Everything has been said, but not everybody has said it.'

That pretty much sums it up.

But, yes, there are obvious (*cough* *cough*) disruptors (*cough* *cough*) with low post counts (*cough* *cough*) who seem to spend a lot of time in GD P (*cough* *cough*) and post obvious garbage (*cough* *cough*). I think they just get off on the attention.

18. I think the vast majority are high school students -
particularly the cut 'n paste trolls who come back around with the same 4 insults and debunked "articles."

I refer to a lot of the tombstoned ding dongs who are really little more than racist halfwits.

22. There are perhaps 8 Obama supporters for every 1 Clinton supporter
If not more. And as people will be people, there will by consequence be an overweight in crap from the more numerous side.

Laying it out as if it is only being done from one side is either blindness or dishonesty. If anything the less numerous side seem to try and make up for being so by sheer effort.

24. In any primary, we go at each other's throats tooth and nail.
But...
there have been at least 200 or so new posters who hit this place hot and heavy early on in the year and got over 1k posts in less than a week's time, then took over the joint with no repercussions for some of the most over-the-top hatred toward a Democratic candidate I have ever seen. Death threats have even been made against Senator Clinton on this site these last few months with no repercussions. I'm not happy about it either. A LOT of us aren't very unhappy about it.
