McGovern Switches to Obama, Urges Clinton to Quit

McGovern Switches to Obama, Urges Clinton to Quit

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

The former Senator had endorsed Clinton. He says he will call Bill Clinton to inform him of his decision.

Clinton’s other big boosters have decisions to make — such as Wes Clark, Gov. Corzine and Gov. Rendell.

One piquant cable interview could change the course of history.

Developing…

Clinton is expected in South Dakota on Thursday.

5. Maybe it's me, but I don't think requesting, telling, imploring HRC to "quit" is the way to go.

She seems immune to outside pressure and trusts her own instincts. Plus, I don't think it makes a bit of difference with the exception of reverse psychology. It may make her dig in and become more determined than she has ever been for any position in her lifetime. I would go as far as guess that Bill could ask her to give it up and she'd keep going. The decision has to come from her own judgment. No, I wish this blood-letting would come to an end and quickly, but I don't think a Greek Chorus of "Quit, Hillary!" is how it will be resolved.

6. As an Obama supporter, I have to agree with you. I have never been
part of the "chorus". She has to come to the conclusion on her own. It can't be seen as public pressure from the establishment calling for the first viable woman candidate to drop out. I think that will only serve to further increase the current rift. That being said, the race baiting tactics of that conference call this morning serves the same purpose. What was the Clinton campaign thinking of?

I agree, it's time for her to go, but I want it to be HER decision, and it doesn't help when the men in the party appear to be ganging up on her.

7. People need to see that Obama is the nominee and marginalize Clinton in case she stays in.
She can stay in but it should be clear who the nominee is. Gore and Carter should be next.

10. Thank you, Sen. McGovern.
You were the person for whom I cast my vote in the first Prez election in which I could vote!

:patriot:

You did me proud today ~~ I wish you had won back then....you would have made one terrific president!

11. This actually makes me feel sorry for Hillary.
She got into politics working for McGovern and now he's the one publicly telling her to drop out. It must hurt for her to hear that from someone she has been close to and respected for so long. I guess its her own fault for letting it get to this point but how sad.

12. Just heard on NPR he left a message with Bill about his decision.
For those of you that don't know, Bill worked on McGovern's campaign back in the day:

13. Interesting connxn & cool pic. I still think he shouldn't have made a point about calling Bill
instead of Hillary, the actual candidate.

15. Clinton will decide for herself, but I do think she needs to publicly acknowledge Obama is far ahead
I'm a big Clinton supporter. I've sent her money, had a sign at my house. I think she should stay in this race for as long as she likes. Doing so will continue voters enthusiasm, will continue voter participation, and have everyone excited for the race in the coming states (which are usually completely ignored). But I do think there needs to be a public acknowledgement that it is virtually certain Obama will win this nomination. She should congratulate him, reaffirm (as she has several times) that she will support him, and focus more on the stump on the need for democratic unity versus McCain.

16. This is a turning point
for Hillary!

She's finally managed to dump Schleprock on Obama!
Enjoy the dark cloud and bad luck that George "Schleprock" McGovern carries with him everywhere he goes!
