Three Choices for VP
I think there's no way that Obama will take another senator in the fall. Moreover, I think there are only three real possibilities.

The Clintonite--Wes Clark: If Obama thinks he needs to repair the damage with the Clintons, Clark would be an excellent pick, allowing the Clintons to play more influence in Washington. Other advantages: foreign and military policy, Southerner, perhaps the man who works hardest for the part (after Obama himself).

The Man of the World--Bill Richardson: great range, major foreign policy magic, and a governor. Other advantages: Westerner (expanding the party in this region), former CLintonite, Hispanic (if people won't vote for Obama because he's black, who the VP is won't matter)

The Woman--Kathleen Sebelius: successful governor in conservative part of the country, helps party expand into West, and a woman, of course. Of all the high profile women politicians who have actively campaigned for Obama, I think she's the best. Other advantages: hard stands on environmental issues, former chair of DGA.

Discuss.

1. joe biden
sibelius would be fine. So would Richardson. I would think of Clark as merely a figurehead. I can't explain it.

But if he were a possibility, he would have endorsed by now.

2. What about Claire McCaskill? Too new?
I was thinking about the possible combos:

Obama and .....

McCaskill
Webb
Edwards
Richardson
Tester
Vilsack
Clark
Warner
Napolitano
Clinton

Lots of possibilities.

8. Too Senatorial
If she were a governor, she would be great. She's been an especially knowledgeable when she's made her many TV experiences. But I think she's also too close to Illinois to be a complete demographic choice.

31. Plus, she's an idiot.
I've seen too much of her on TV swooning over Obama. Literally swooning.

:puke:

She doesn't really seem to have a lot on the ball when she speaks.

4. I don't think another woman would help the ticket at this point. The older white women
would see it as a pander and they would be pissed he picked someone else over HIllary. He needs to pick a white male. I like Webb. I like Richardson, but the Repubs would have a field day with 2 minorities on the ticket. Wes Clark is a no go. I think they already have a short list and none of the above are on it.

But I wonder about his health. He had by-pass surgery, or something, and he looked like hell afterwards.

7. I like Selibus or Richardson, both would make great picks
I doubt Obama would pick any Clintonite at this point. Trust matters. Richardson worked for the Clintons but he turned out to be an independent man. I actually have really come to like and respect him especially after the whole Judas thing. He won me over for standing up for what he believes in with class against Carville.

32. If he picked Richardson (ugh!), it would be obvious that Richardson sold his endorsement.
And his last several cable appearances have been abysmal; he sounded like a total whiner and needlessly harsh against the Clintons.

13. He needs a white Southerner
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x5860905

And he needs one with gravitas. Richardson adds absolutely nothing to the ticket, and given that McCain will have to pick a VP from the right, we have nothing to worry about with Hispanic voters. That he gets 30% of the vote in GOP primaries proves this.

Richardson is also painful to listen to one the stump, he was painful to listen to in the debates, he is not that charismatic, and when I think of him going against someone who is in a VP debate, I worry.

Sebeilus would also be a bad choice just because, that's too much change for America to take in one election. I can at least admit the country is not ready to go that far, even if no one else will.

I agree with Clark, because he fits every qualification, and he is a Southerner. I still think the best pick is a quantity that is unknown nationally, such as Sen. Bob Graham, Gov. Henry, Gov. Mabus and Sen. Nunn

19. Hm. I see that Clark was born in Chicago and moved to Arkansas as a kid.
He just doesn't come across as southern.

Not a bad pick, but just not a big hit.

20. Appeal to the western states
I think one of Obama's electoral strategies, both for voters and toward the party, is to develop opportunities in western states. I think that he's pick should move in that direction.

Clark is the best of the three, but I don't think he adds a sharp enough contrast.

We need a southern white guy. Just my opinion.

16. I think it will be Jim Webb.
He brings military and national security expertise to the ticket. Virginia becomes a realistic possibility. And he will perform the traditional role of the VP candidate that Holy Joe and Edwards could not or would not fulfill. He will be relentless in attacking McCain and the RWers who have hijacked our country.

Some will hold out hope he is shot, and will vote for him because of that if he has a strong white male by his side

sad but true

21. I think it has to be Richardson
His foreign policy experience is invaluable. McCain doesn't have the anti-immigration crap most closely associated with the pubs - he has that bill with Kennedy still floating around so Richardson could definitely help with the Hispanic vote and bring in a lot of votes from NM and even AZ and NV.

27. I think Webb is a pretty solid choice
Helps put Virginia solidly in play, blunts the tired "dems hate the troops" charade and the "Obama is taking you guns" charade that Mrs. Clinton borrowed in PA.

30. Napolitano brings more to the table than Sebelius. If you believe the election is about Iraq, Clark
is a good choice, but I believe the election will be about the economy.

Richardson is a good choice. Bob Graham, Jim Webb, and Evan Bayh are also interesting choices.

Biden, Edwards, Clinton, and Dean are all good presidential candidates but none really brings all that much to the ticket as a VP.
