I am ready to change our focus to the general
Edited on Wed May-07-08 12:30 AM by Godhumor
I don't post on this side of the forums much, but I figured tonight deserved it. I am an ardent Clinton supporter, and I am from NY. I knew things were tightening up for my candidate right around New Hampshire, actually, but I stuck with her as long as it seemed she had a fighting chance. Obviously, tonight has deflated my sails in one respect, but in another I find myself gearing up all over again.

My candidate came in second this time around, and I am OK with that.

Obama is not my ideal candidate, and I am OK with that, too.

However, the people of this country have spoken in an election that has given more voices to this process than ever before, and I am now ready to start the election battle for all 50 states.

There has been a lot of animosity here, and there are now voices of "unity" speaking out. Consider me one of them. This election is not about popularity, or race, or sex. It is about setting this country back on a Democratic heading, and, frankly, I believe Obama can and will do that.

I still support Clinton, and I hope she finds success during the Democratic revolution that will occur in November.

As of now, I support Obama, for I am a Democrat.

3. By the way, you are one of the people I recognize on this forum
As being honest, fair-minded, and consistent in your praise of the process. GOod show to you over these past few months and good show to your, (now our) candidate.

4. It's an historic night.
The party of Thomas Jefferson is about to nominate a black man to the presidency.

Holy. Fucking. Shit.

Shouldn't we all just pause for a moment? Isn't this beautiful? Are those tears in my eyes?

Yes. We. Can.

5. Regardless of how our primary ended it was going to be historic
Either a woman or an African American was going to take up the mantle of the Democratic party. Frankly, I always thought the real fight was going to be the primary--I believe with all my heart that the Democrat is going to trounce the Republican this November.

So yes, I believe tonight we looked at our first African American president.

6. I don't think we'll ever see a woman president.
Honestly. I don't think it will ever be allowed.

13. We'll see. I think once one wall breaks the rest will come soon after
The fact is, we have a lot of powerful women now rising through the political ranks on our side, and I think we'll see one capture the presidency within the next 4 cycles (assuming Obama holds on for 2, of course).

If Obama does not win in November, it might take a good deal longer, though.

16. I agree, Godhumor.
I think that Obama just getting the nomination helps break down walls for women and Hispanics, et al.

I know there are a lot of people on this board who wanted Hilary to be the nominee, and that would have broken some walls down too.

All I can say is, it's about damn time we had a nominee who wasn't a white male (no offense to the good white males in the world).

9. Thank you.
And if Senator Clinton still somehow manages to pull ahead, I'll vote for her.

Preventing another Republican administration from completing the destruction of this country is just too damned important.

10. As much as I wish that might happen...
I have accepted Obama as our face for '08, but I appreciate your gesture.

That said, i am sure if Clinton had cinched the nomination up at some point in this process we would be seeing the same sort of threads from Obama supporters.

GD-P got heated, but in the end almost everyone here remembers why we are here. I can't imagine any other result.

11. I just posted much the same... I love Hillary, but now's the time for unity.
She can continue to compete, that's her choice, but I think there will be a growing understanding that this contest is pretty much over. I hope she continues to win states, and Puerto Rico. I hope FL and MI are seated. But, ultimately, Obama is so far ahead even that won't make a difference. Reaching out a hand to her, accepting that she HAS done incredibly well, will help this healing process along. So many Clinton supporters are so angry, Obama can do a lot of good just by doing what he's been doing - congratulating her, emphasizing there will be Democratic unity in November. I only hope supporters will follow suit. To defeat McCain we will need every vote we can get.

12. My little addendum
I think the problem is that the past 7 years of just terrible government has made many people much more passionate about not accepting the lesser of two evils. So much of the anger from the Clinton and Obama camps come from people 100% convinced that the other candidate is just not "acceptable". As many have said, others are beginning to realize that this goes beyond personality and touches something more deep. Nothing changes if another Republican is put in charge, period.

I knew this all along, and I know many others did as well. I think in the coming weeks, after a lot of soul searching, many of the more hardened Clinton backers will see it, too.

18. Me, too!!!!!
Great post!!!

I think we all need to become voices of unity. 'Cause that's how we beat mcsame AND dominate all the way down the ticket.

I'm an Obama supporter, but I've had mixed feelings about Clinton for a long time because I find a lot to admire about her. And I'd been doing an exercise with myself that entailed finding all the ways that I could support her - and there were many! I would support her anyway, if she were our nominee. Eagerly.

Besides, I know of a great place to direct all that animosity and anger and scorched-earth nastiness: at the republi-CONS, where it belongs.

Let's tsunami them in November, 'eh?

Thank you for this post. I suspect there'll be many more like this as we all come to the realization that the choice has been made and that's who we go forward with.

'Cause the alternative is mccain, yanno? :puke:
