1. There's nothing to be gracious ABOUT. The fight isn't over. She said so...
Edited on Tue May-06-08 11:44 PM by BlooInBloo
Until the fight's over, there's no concept of "graciousness".

EDIT: Typo.

11. Well, why are you supporting Obama?
Obama was very gracious and respectful in his speech.

Why would you deliberately alienate people who are potential Obama supporters? Are you just a Hillary hater? Or do you want Obama to win in November?

2. Why must we have "the decorum police" here? What possesses people to be self-righteous?
This does not ever solve a problem. People will do ... what people will do.

13. I think that if Obama loses in November,
it will be because of the people who say they support him.

Alienating Dems whose votes Obama will need in Nov hurts Obama.

That's so self-centered, especially right after Obama made such a respectful speech.

to be an ass about it, and rub salt into Clinton supporters wounds, that is their right, but they could very well cause those supporters to sit out this election

29. Yes, I thought your suggestion was very good, reasonable, decent and
most fitting, especially iin light of Obama's AWESOME speech in NC tonight. ( http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x128655 ).

I was saying your detractors were being 'sore winners', not you.

14. That is a reasonable approach. Of course if I am wrong and it doesn't happen
and they pursue the course as lany davis suggested, screw the graciousness

I am just giving them the benefit of the doubt

5. I'm not worried
The excitement on DU tonight is FOR Obama, our next President. Senator Clinton is receding rapidly in our minds. I don't thing (well, I hope, anyways) that there will be much untoward behavior.

16. Hey, we can be gracious to fellow dem voters while still aggressive
against the real enemy.

Paying attention to Hillary after today is a waste.

It's about McCain and the low-life GOP racist machine.

Let's focus the fire where it counts.

30. To the gracious, sincere Clinton supporters by all means
Edited on Wed May-07-08 12:01 AM by Catherina
I don't think anyone here ever had a problem with them. The assholes are a different matter though. I'll be very happy the day Obama is officially the nominee and the Rev Wright 24/7, Whites will never vote for a Black man crowd is permanently shut up or shown the door so we can forget the ugly racism that wounded many of us to our core.

What's strange is that the decent Clinton supporters aren't making demands for graciousness. I think it all works like apologies where only the wrong sort of people demand them so they can manipulate them afterwards and decent people never do

35. I've always tried to be...
For the most part, I've been successful. I've lost my temper once or twice but I've always tried to maintain a civil tone and I've always been quick to apologize when I cross the line in the heat of the moment. It helps that I don't post all that often.

I respect and applaud Hillary's supporters for their passion and fire, qualities which reflect highly on them and which we will need in November if we are to win against McCain. I hate the petty bickering and one-ups-man-ship that has plagued DU of late, and I've tried my hardest not to contribute to it.

Hillary has fought a tough campaign, and her supporters are loyal and dedicated to the cause of democracy and progressive thought. These are admirable qualities, ones we should all embrace. It is no bad thing to fight tenaciously for what you believe.

But it has been far too easy, in this chaotic time, to let personal insults and empty rhetoric replace meaningful debate. I refer to supporters of both candidates when I say this. I have tried, very hard, to rise above and I urge all my fellow Democrats to do the same.

I feel for those who consider this rift beyond repair, and I understand. The actions of some of my fellow Obama supporters have been odious and unwarranted, divisive and destructive. So, too, have been the words and deeds of some of those on the other side. But in the end, those ideals that unite us, that define us as Democrats, are stronger than the petty name-calling and baseless character attacks that have divided us to date. I firmly believe that, and I ask everyone to consider that before declaring that they will "never" support Obama in the GE.

We Obama supporters cannot undo the things that have been said or done, but those who engage in the politics of divisiveness do not represent us as a whole. We as Democrats are better than that, susceptible though we may be to the baser instincts of human nature. But in the end, we can, all of us, usher in a new age of political discourse.

I'm not certain Obama can live up to his words. I can't know that. But I am certain that he will be a better president that McCain, and that he means the best for this country and its citizens.
